They shut down for a while during the recession, didn't they?

Nope. Not at GP

Their past wholesale changes were after being bought out by Koch. They had struggles with Union and cut a lot of people to save money .they never closed anything

Today’s deal is on different level.

but will rely on purchased pulp as its feedstock.

This will effect market pricing of pulp that is used in other local industries. That being said, their is a glut of wood waste (mill chips, land clearing material, slash etc) nationwide.

My favorite I’ve heard about was from a contractor I work with.

Someone did a code dump of all their programs and put it on a jump drive before they left.

Considering their product is a Customizable Off the Shelf program where they make their money by selling upgrades or hiring out their people to act as support, this cost them tons of money in lost projects, as any competitor talking to that person could buy the then-current version of all the code and reverse-engineer it to make their own.

Call me crazy, but that sounds like it might be lightly illegal.

Don’t know if it is or not, but the code definitely got copied and they went to full lockdown on code as a result.

This is not good at all.

Hopefully it gives those Together Baton Rouge clowns a wake up call with all the attacks they have been making on Exxon

Remember when Trump said US trade is at a disadvantage with China? This is what he’s talking about.

From what I heard from the workers last night, the big shift was the company being bought out by the Koch brothers and then bringing in a manager to run things whose attitude was “I’m going to change the whole culture here.”

In my opinion, this had a lot to do with it going downhill for sure, but this was well after Koch purchased GP. The manager almost did the same thing at a GP facility in West AL before he was "moved" to Port Hudson...

At one time not very long ago, this was the flagship mill of the GP fleet and the 2 fine paper machines were some of the most efficient (low cost producers) producing this grade in the industry prior to his arrival. It is surprising to me however that the mill could not be repurposed to make an unbleached board grade, although it would require a significant investment/rebuild of existing assets or new machine. I'm sure it was investigated but $$$ invested vs return and POV market conditions could have said it was a no go. The fine paper business (printing/writing papers) is and has been a steady decline for many years, but as of a few years ago, I figured these machines may be a couple of the few left in US still running to maintain the basement level demand of that grade of paper. As a result of the machine shutdowns, the mill can purchase pulp cheaper than it can make it in house to support the minimal draw for the tissue/towel business.

It definitely sucks for the 700 employees, but I know they are highly skilled and hopefully will be able to find a landing spot with all the industry within the Baton Rouge area.

Actually, it will probably encourage them - I believe that mill just recently was granted an ITEP exemption.

It was, and I’m sure that GP could’ve repurposed it if they wanted.

The Together Baton Rouge folks don’t care about jobs.

I know two people that lost their jobs there. One had worked there for 16 years, the other had only been there a few months. I hope that they can find something else soon.

Lots of competition in unbleached kraft paper. More mills have transitioned to that over the years.

It is easy to blame the Manager. The guy running things is always blamed. But, as Warren Buffet says

"When a management with a reputation for brilliance tackles a business with a reputation for bad economics, it is the reputation of the business that remains intact."
