Maybe if you’re comparing 1st world, civilized cultures. If you wanna start comparing developing nation cultures, you start seeing some awful things that don’t belong in any good culture

There is some truth to this but there are clearly some cultures that are superior to others in the modern world. It’s just Darwinian evolution.

Yeah, they love these third world cultures for the 2 weeks they stay there. If they had to live like the average person in that culture, they’d be on the next raft out of there.

Sure, I agree with that. There are a lot of different ways to live. I prefer relative freedom.

I disagree. A culture is the culmination of a group's interpretations of reality but those interpretations don't necessarily reflect actual reality. Examples of these are beliefs such as the Earth being flat. heliocentrism or those who sacrificed virgins to their gods for some believed largess.

Ha! To be fair, the author has lived and traveled around the world more than a few times. I find his articles quite fascinating. Great responses thus far.

“Mostly through the Harvard Botanical Museum, he spent three years in the Amazon and Andes as a plant explorer, living among fifteen indigenous groups in eight Latin American nations, while making some 6,000 botanical collections.[2] He conducted ethnographic fieldwork among several indigenous societies of northern Canada. His work later took him to Haiti to investigate folk preparations implicated in the creation of zombies, an assignment that led to his writing Passage of Darkness (1988) and The Serpent and the Rainbow (1986), a bestseller. The book was used loosely as the basis of a Wes Craven horror film, The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988).“

I had a coworker who had a poster with this quote up in her classroom. I silently disagreed with it for years.

We are unequivocally the most successful and widely imitated society on the planet. Across the world there are countless countries whose originating documents are modeled on ours. All too often, they have failed to prosper like the US has. Why? Because their culture doesnt match their aspirations. Without a commitment to white Western European values and practices, the rest doesn’t matter. We are a better culture than any before or since. Let’s hope we haven’t polluted it beyond recovery.

This

There's a certain level of morality you expect with 1st world cultures.

While I generally agree with idea of the quote, it's too vague and I'm willing to bet the author has certain opinions on things such as: slavery, child exploitation, etc.

Some cultures today still practice those and its morally bankrupt to simply attribute it to being a "different culture".

We stolt this land fair and square from the Indians.

We’ll fight better than they did to keep it.

Installation of prevalent culture goes to the victors.

It's spot on. Anyone who thinks that there are no relevant or moral cultures outside of the US are either ignorant or full of themselves.

I think it’s a nebulous statement. And a bit of a straw man.
