Confused when you say mods.
Do you mean a real Seiko that you modded with something, or a “Seiko-Mod” which is basically a fake Rolex with a Seiko logo?

It’s the Toyota Camry of watches. It is moderately priced, it won’t impress anybody, but it will reliably perform its intended purpose

Totally understand that, and I would not mind having a watch that is ultra reliable but less flashy.
With that said, the green alpinist really is beautiful and that’s why I’m considering it.

I have a Seiko chronograph along with a few luxury watches. I still wear the Seiko from time to time because I just like the way it looks.

Thank you for starting this thread. I have a Seiko that I haven’t worn in years, but this thread has me interested in beginning my own collection.

Been looking at their chronographs too. I like the Panda one they have that’s popular.
Also like Seiko’s field watch.
But wonder if Hamilton is better for the field watch design.

I got a very nice Seiko dive watch when I graduated high school in the 80's. Really liked it. Never took it off. Lost it in the Tchefuncte River a few years later in college. I guess it's still mine. I kind of know the area I lost it in. Just can't get to it.

If you really want to get into watches, nothing wrong with starting with a couple quality seiko pieces.
But if you willing to spend that money, buy a pre-owned Tudor Black Bay 58.
Timeless, versatile, and quality. It is a perfect jumping off spot into the deeper end of the pool. Yes, you're only getting one watch for the investment, but the BB is easy to dress up or down. Extremely versatile with a NATO, quality leather, or bracelet.

I've got a Seiko "Pepsi" Diver on my wrist right now I bought as a solider in Saudi Arabia in 1990. Still runs perfectly and looks nice.

Seiko makes entry-level all the way up to grand complications and they are all very solid. I have mostly Seiko watches in my collection and would definitely like to add a Grand Seiko to it.

Has some of the most perfect sizes IMHO and their mechanism is tried and true.
Any true enthusiast will tell you, if you want a standout luxury mechanism it's the spring drive from grand seiko.
Personally love my 2 gs, I have a Rolex I rarely wear now. I daily my seiko

Seikos are great. Alpinist is an awesome explorer watch.
Hamiltons are sweet too. The khaki field is the indistry standard for field watches.
I recently got a Hamilton Intramatic Automatic Chronograph and love it.
Also recently picked up an AV86 1564 Chronodate
But there are SO many really good options in the sub $1k market right now. Vaer is making some awesome watches - their Apocalypse GMT is a killer option for a GADA watch if you dont mind quartz. They also offer several automatic options. I love the D5 Tropic Auto specifically.

One last thought, Militado makes some bulletproof field watches for under $100. 10atm WR, screw down crown and sapphire crystal.
I have one in 38mm and it takes a beating and keeps ticking. Might be an interesting option to scratch some different itches:

Had an SKX 007 for about 3 years. Lost time, and had it serviced twice. Eventually quit working after the second service. One of my favorite watches due to the style and history, but I shelved it because it was a pretty paperweight.
Bought a sterile captain willard clone for $90. Still keeps time after 7 years. It's a cheap chinese watch that I wear every day, and it's taken a ton of abuse, but it keeps time.
I'll upgrade if this cheap clone ever quits working. But it won't be a Seiko.

I have several Seiko Turtles, a Slim Willard, a Willard mod (I sold a green Willard recently), a Mini Marinemaster (SPB187), and several others, including mods. Avoid the 6R35 movement if you can. Most have been good watches.
If I was going to buy a new watch today, I’d get a new Longines Hydroconquest 39mm. It’s the best bang for a buck Swiss diver out there today, I think.
