I mean high level good at something substantial.

My daughter is an actress. She did some community theater when she was 5-6. The first audition she had for a major part was when she was 8. James Franco picked her out of a public casting call. She's 12 now and she's been in a variety of movies, commercials, and TV shows ever since. Was pretty much good at it from the beginning. No lessons or anything like that.

Made my first C in sixth grade. It was in conduct. I became a problem as a teenager. Graduated high school with a C average. Started smoking that evil weed and flunked out of LSU as a freshman. Took six years to graduate from college.

OP needs to talk to my parents to find out what not to do.

Find what? The pic, nah just typed in :dvtg :.

The reply? Yeah, not really paying attention here. I'm doing a meet and greet in the Lurkers thread to see who is team OweO and who is team PJ.

It's tied up so far.

Yes, when he started he struggled but he was naturally competitive and worked his butt off to improve.

He went from the bottom to the top because it was important to him.

I think that is the key. They have to decide they want it instead of you pushing them.

Not like woodwind instruments actually count as instruments.

No, I was referring to the musical instrument. No clue about his daughter's abilities in the deptartment to which you're referring.

I'm pretty young so I'm not that far removed from my travel ball days and high school and college sports days.

My dad never pushed me when I was young (IE under 12)
I asked to switch to a different (travel) team from the local CYO team because I wanted to play all the time (around 9 years old). From then on anytime I made a jump from one level to another it was because I asked for it. We practiced at a park walking distance from my house everyday, but only because I begged him to go with me.

I didn't start taking lessons till 8th grade and that was only because I was having some issues that my dad couldn't pinpoint and I asked if we could find some help.

From then on me and my dad had an agreement. He sat me down and said if they (my parents) were going to invest in serious travel ball and lessons that they expected to give 100%. We were lucky though because I loved the game and saw continued success throughout high school. Effort level was not a problem. Every step of the way my dad would remind how proud he was of me and that would stay the same whether I played or Didnt. I never felt any pressure.

I do agree with the previous poster that said once you start a season you DO NOT allow your kid to quit. That's just setting a bad precedent.

Ultimately I played 2 years in college, and to this day my dad still says my first game in a college jersey was the proudest moment of his life (outside his kids' birth) because he knew it was what I wanted.

TL;Dr:
I was a travel ball kid with a dad that just enjoyed cheering me on and seeing me be happy

That's all you need to do.
