Older son (10) is very good at soccer and plays on a very competitive team that travels, however he is not the best kid on the team nor would I say he "excels" at soccer. Better than the average 10 year old, yes. But lots of practice and training have been a big part of his development along with his passion for soccer....which (for us) is paramount if you want your kid to enjoy their life in sports as a kid. Love for the game is important to us as to help avoid them getting burned out.
Same exact situation for our 7 year old but for baseball.

I have 3 and all are different. This was my middle child. She has always been self motivated, to the point we had to pull her out of the water (training) from time to time against her will. Works extremely hard in the classroom as well, 3.8GPA through her JR year.
I have never seen pushing a kid towards success ever work, if the kid does not want it you cant make it happen. My son is a freshman in H.S. Plays football and baseball but does not have the same drive as of yet. Our only rule as parents was you have to do something extra with the school, either a really involved club, or sport etc. Also not allowed to quit once you start a season...period.

My daughter swims for a Big 12 school on scholarship. Hardest working kid I have ever seen. Never missed a 5am practice before school in High school. Was not the most talented but outworks most kids.
Coach Miles is that you?

As far as sports go, you really have to wait until they are in junior high or high school before you can truly see that they are better than everyone else. So many kids, especially in baseball, dominate at an early age but only because they are bigger, faster, stronger, or have better hand-eye coordination. I've seen so many parents invest thousands into training because their kid showed a little talent at age 10, but it wasn't really a talent gap, moreso a maturity gap, if you know what I mean.

No, but I see him and his wife every year at Big 12 Championships.

My nephew does Quiz Bowl and has a near photographic memory. All the other kids walk around with binders full of information. He just reads a few publications and watches the news.
OTOH he's a decent baseball player and recently made his HS team as a 9th grader. but has to work really hard at it. He's not a natural.

Absolutely agree and have seen so many examples of this. The Little league and pop warner all stars get caught after puberty almost always. There are rare examples but until a kid is done growing you never know.

My 8th grader is playing basketball with the 9th and JV basketball teams. The resentment of the 9th grade parents not worth it. But, the JV is short handed and everyone is thankful for the help.

My kid plays travel baseball. He practices four nights a week throughout the year. Fall Ball, Winter Ball, Spring/Summer Ball. He likes me and coaches yelling at him. He loves spending summer vacations at the World Series while other kids play at the beach. He loves doing homework at 830 PM after practice. He especially enjoyed all new baseball eager Christmas. What makes it special is that he wants it this way. He wants to better himself. He is nine years old.
Whatever you do, don't push your kid.

In junior high my son was an average swimmer, nothing special. Almost quit before high school.
Joined a very traditionally dominant high school program. He learned to compete, train and lead. Was 4 time state champion, 7 time all-American, and team captain.
Got to college swam Div 1 was All Conference all four years and 2 time captain.
Kid got into the right program with great leadership, facilities, and he flourished. Best thing I was get out of his way and let the "experts" do their job.
