OT parents of successful kids

Any of you have a kid (21 and under) who is really good at something? I mean high level good at something substantial. Something cool, like a sport or a craft or job or something like that. When they first started, did they suck at it, or was natural ability evident right away?

My son is great at bangin' all of the OT's wife's and daughters.

Don't instill fear in your kids and let them explore. They will naturally find their strengths

Showed a knack for it but wasn't in shape or athletic. Had to put in a lot of hard work to put it all together.

My daughter is 7, and wants to be a vet. We approach this like an athlete training for his sport. She crushes in academics.

My daughter swims for a Big 12 school on scholarship. Hardest working kid I have ever seen. Never missed a 5am practice before school in High school. Was not the most talented but outworks most kids.

This one time, at band camp, the trailer burned down.

But what's the parents' roll? Support? How much do you push? How much do you go hands off? I think that's the OP's question. Is there a right/wrong here?
