We had a $10k budget and ended up spending $20k. We didn’t even have to rent a venue. It was all pretty minimal but it adds up. Every wedding I’ve been to as an adult easily has been $40k ++. Lol at the dads that say they won’t open the pocket book

While it is ridiculous, it's not extreme. I know several people who hit that easily over the last 20 years.
I can see that easily.

I also know of two from a middle class family that each hit $100k.
This is insane. Especially they truly are middle class. They will never get out of that debt

I place no value on weddings, but it meant a lot to my wife so we ended up spending somewhere in the 40-50K range. She paid for the entire thing other than her rings and rehearsal dinner, so I'm not sure on the exact cost. We do pretty well though so it wasn't a big hit in terms of savings, and we already owned a home together at the time.

Funny you came up with that amount, my son got married last night, and 44k is almost exactly what her dad spent. 10k for the venue, then the photographer, wedding planner, alcohol and food. My wife did the cakes, which probably saved them another 4-5k.

quote:Yeah, maybe the average OT wedding.
The average wedding cost $44,000 in 2018.
According to these guys, the average wedding cost increased from $27K in 2017 to $44K in 2018.
Obviously given a >60% cost increase, someone is working with skewed samples or playing with funny numbers. In running those numbers, they do toss in costs of everything from rings to the Honeymoon which adds to the number..

People that have large weddings.

Why do you assume that a middle class family has debt or would take on debt for a wedding? Even at $100k?

Poor people. Probably a cash bar and had a money dance too.

bullshite. Just a made up figure by the wedding industry - no different than the engagement ring sham - to get people to feel comfortable spending less but still way too much.
I'd venture the real average cost is well in the single K range.

What is the responsibility of the grooms parents? reception dinner

That’s it?
That seems unfair.
Perfectly fair. The grooms aren't coming up with these bat shite crazy weddings.

I’m getting married later this year and we did as best we could to keep costs reasonable...ring and honeymoon excluded, we are projected to be about $26,000 all in for 150-170 folks but hoping we come in under that. We are doing 1/3 each between us, my parents, and my in-laws so I’m very fortunate. Doesn’t seem like it adds up but all the small stuff does.
Wedding dress was $1k. Venue was a little over $12000 alone (includes setup, tables and chairs, linens and plates, DJ) and that is in a suburb outside of Houston...couldn’t afford inside loop but need close enough to civilization so locals don’t feel the need to leave super early to get home at reasonable hour and also have hotels in the area for out of towners from BR. Most venues force you to buy an alcohol package through them but this one let’s you BYOB so we are going the Costco/Specs route for $1k or so. However, a security cop and two bartenders are $800 total. Food is pricier than you’d think for a trustworthy caterer and so are flowers (we are going through HEB blooms). Cakes are pricey. We are doing a rehearsal brunch the morning of the wedding (forget tradition/bad luck) so we are saving there as well.
The real sham in all of this is the $3k photographer....
All that said, I think we are doing well.

I'd be willing to bet my older sister's wedding was 100k. She married a trust fund kid though. I think my dad gave her 10k and said if she wanted some insanely expensive wedding they could pay the rest.

A lot of people complain about being in debt then do insanely stupid shite like this.
Wife and I had our whole wedding for $7k. Everyone had a blast it was a celebration then we went on a nice one year anniversary trip.
Wedding costs are especially insane because most marriages end up failing anyway. I blame Instagram.
