I'm assuming it goes back to the tradition of a dowry along with religious/cultural traditions for the celebration.

It's been morphed into an ugly business though where girls get to swipe a credit card on anything and everything they want. $8000 for a dress...one dress...worn one time.

$350 for a ceremony musician who looks at the song list the morning of the wedding.

It's baffled me since I started playing weddings 6 years ago.

Depending where they go that’s still not cheap and the majority of the expense goes towards the reception so it’s not like you’re saving a whole lot of money there.

Goodness people pay for the ceremony music It's a total of like 30 minutes. Maybe an hour if music is being played while guests walk in.

I had a cousin help out with that. I already had the playlist made. I just had him come to the rehearsal and then we were good to go.

But hey, if people are willing to pay you then go for it.

Lol

They’re not getting $5k for that dress

My wife looked into selling her $8k dress for money toward our honeymoon the best offer she got back was under $1000. She kept it, I’m hoping it’ll still fit in 10 years.

Considering the woman is who gives a shite about any of that, her parents can pay because I sure as frick won't.

If it were up to me, the wedding would consist of sitting infront of a judge and taking the family out to a $$-$$$ restaurant after, and spending the remainder on a boat.

How does that sound to most women?

It also seems fair to me because the bride is probably the one making it cost so much

The groom hasn’t dreamed of his fairy tale wedding his whole life

I'll tell my daughter like my parents and my wife's parents told us. If she wants a big wedding, her and her fiancee can figure out how to pay for it. Big expensive weddings are such a stupid waste of money.

After my children turn 18, my only financial responsibility is college tuition. That's the way I see it anyway. I will be willing to help out in an emergency if they have their shite together as well.

Is it really still the daughters’ family’s responsibility? In this day and age I think most people share, or at least they should.

That being said, $40k for a wedding is extreme.

The reception isn't the groom's responsibility.

But the Rehearsal dinner, flowers, and invitations are the groom's responsibility(or his parents). He obviously doesn't have a say in selecting any of it, just pay for it.

I have daughters. There will be no $40k weddings.

They have savings for things like house down payments, grad school for Relevant careers, or investment opportunities.

My wife and I had a modest, yet beautiful wedding and that's the standard by which we will pay.

While it is ridiculous, it's not extreme. I know several people who hit that easily over the last 20 years. I also know of two from a middle class family that each hit $100k.

I believe you are doing it wrong.

I will be the one being paid at auction time. I'm expecting six figures when I sell her to the highest bidder. I mean when she meets the man of her dreams.

Seems low. It seems like people either skip it or have huge, expensive weddings these days

Please ignore. I thought you were saying you DJ’d for receptions for only an hour. Not playing at the actual ceremony
