I haven’t had a weeding yet, so I haven’t paid anything. But when I do, we’ll be getting a DJ

See, this does not bother me in the least bit. The hatred against big weddings makes sense when we are talking about a situation where someone is either going into debt or blowing money saved for them that would have greatly improve their quality of life. But I don't have any issue for people who can more than comfortably afford it.
Apparently, it bothers some baws here who think small and have some fear of others enjoying the fruits of their own labor. My daughter will get a reasonably decent wedding, if that's what she wants. If not, we'll contribute to an investment fund that they can use in their best judgement.

I know very very wealthy people that would not spend 40k on a wedding, I also know people that have second mortgages that would spend 40k to make sure they kept up with expectations.

The average wedding cost $44,000 in 2018

Sounds like propaganda/inflated math by an institution with a vested interest in making people think spending $44k on a wedding is the norm. Simple math/economics should tell you that people aren't spending an average of $44k on their weddings. Sure there are a lot of people that are spending that and more, but there are countless people that are doing simple church/home wedding/reception, going to the courthouse for a few bucks, etc. I wonder if this "study" even accounts for those at all?

That money would be better suited for helping them buy a house/furniture/appliance.

What a bitch...

We were grateful for the help our parents gave us, but we were fully prepared to pay for the whole thing ourselves.

We were shooting for 10-12k budget, but ended up closer to 20.

shite adds up. We spent on things that were important to us and went cheap on things that weren't. For example, our wedding cake was $29.99 from Publix.

Well obviously. You can’t afford the bands that sound good at weddings.
