Orleans DA battles Judge to let a killer OUT of prison

Votes matter. Leftist NOLA.com labels this a "legal victory."

After his conviction for slashing a housekeeper to death at age 15, Scott Lingle was never supposed to leave prison. But the Louisiana 4th Circuit Court of Appeal voted 2-1 last week to hand a chance at freedom to the teenage killer turned prison pastor, and a legal victory to Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams.
The court found that under state law, Williams could clear the way for Lingle to pitch the state Parole Board, despite the objections of Chief District Judge Karen Herman. The panel’s decision affirms Williams’ power in one of his few face-offs with a criminal court judge thus far.
Police said McLeod was stabbed in the head, neck, chest and torso inside the Gentilly house of a 98-year-old woman for whom she was caring. Her death was caused by slashes to her throat.
Lingle protested his innocence through two murder trials -- the first ended in a hung jury, the second with his conviction -- but in recent years he’s accepted responsibility.
In one motion, Lingle said that he started abusing drugs in the 5th grade, and that faced with the prospect of being returned to his abusive father, he responded “in the most unthinkable way.”.

This cities crime is skyrocketing out of control even by its own ridiculous standards and the DA is focusing on getting killers out of prison?
WTF man? I'm all for a good rehab story and getting someone back into society as a productive member but christ we have bigger fish to fry right now.

How long has he been in prison?
Looks like 40+ years

So having shitty parents and using drugs makes it understandable to commit murder?

The DA has his own trial coming up in a few months where the Feds rarely lose. This tells you all you need to know about this DA. DA stands for dumbass in this case.

Unfortunately, his First Assistant is just as wacky and there is an apparatus in place to continue the new "progressive" "prosecution" model.
I'm all for seeking alternatives to incarceration for drug and non-violent offenses, but when you start getting all lenient on violent offenders, who in the public really fricking wins?

Is this the case that a teenage Mitch was rumored to have been in the car that dropped the guy off?

Is this really the job of the DA? Shouldn't the public defenders office be trying to make this argument instead of the DA?

What an unfortunate name for a judge.

Hmm...I would hope it's possible to rehabilitate a person in 40 years.

DA has to do something. The revolving door is running at mach speed not prosecuting drug offenses and other things he's deemed not worthy of charging.
Word from one NOPD, they are fed up... not bother arresting for a lot of things, waste of time knowing they will just be turned loose.

You conveniently left out the fact that this person has served more 3 decades in prison. It's not like they are tossing back on the street at 18.

Not long enough.

The First Assistant is actually the person you want in that position. The DA is a whole other story.

The citizens of New Orleans voted for this. They WANT this crime rate, based on the landslide JW won in, and that Cantrell will win unopposed.
This all may be the last straw for me.

Which is this a-hole’s intention.
Which works until cops start dropping these people off in front of his house and saying “We aren’t arresting people for anything.”

When someone says “life in prison”, they mean “LIFE IN PRISON”.
shite like this is why the argument against the death penalty fails. “He would be behind bars for life for cheaper if he got life without parole”. Which doesn’t work when someone gets his sentence reduced.
