I'm trying to understand the underlying contention here - You seem to be saying because the AI is unaware of it's own nature and requires capital (primarily in the form of compute and energy), that this can't be the AI Singularity.

However, I don't know that those two limiting factors definitionally limit us from being at the AI Singularity, and if they do, the primary threshold to cross isn't the ability to improve itself, but the ability to employ things that provide the required compute and energy so that it can improve itself.

And I think that's important because Altman is clearly, to me, saying that AI is to the point where it can improve itself, and almost certainly doesn't believe AI can employ things to generate the compute and energy necessary to improve itself. Which means Altman is not making the claim that you seem to be arguing against here.

No, I’m not referring to capital or compute. I think the simplest way to describe it is that the Singularity means the system can, without outside prompt or input, design its own (better) replacement. The autocorrect on your phone can “learn and improve itself”. Hell, dictation software was doing that three decades ago. A system becoming better at the task it was designed to do isn’t the kind of “self-improvement” that’s relevant to the Singularity. The whole point of the Singularity is that the system can improve itself to the point we no longer understand it, therefore racing past humanity. You can have the most bestest self improving LLM in all the universe, and it’s still an LLM, and it will always be an LLM until the heat death of the universe.
