re: One might ask "Why would you live in a HOA 'hood?" Here's why

I would like to point out his neighborhood has $75 yearly OPTIONAL HOA dues.

Exceed 20mph through any of our residential streets and find out. You’ll be standing tall before the man looking at hundreds of dollars in fines and civil restitution.

You sound like a tough guy. It's easy talk big about what you are going to Do. You know who isn't talking big now? The 13 year old girl who blew her hands off popping illegal fireworks in 2014 while her parents drank alcohol in the driveway with the neighbors all accomplices.

My uncle lived in one stickler HOA neighborhood once that was trying to stop him from building a big deck with an overhang in his backyard because of some rule that anything visible over the fence has to meet their approval. Thankfully I've never lived under a nazi regime quite like that
I guess I just dont understand this mindset. I moved into the neighborhood knowing good and well what the rules were. Again, we don't have an HOA per se, but we do have a covenants and restrictions board that has to review any building permits and there are other rules about what's visible from the street etc. If I suddenly changed my mind and wanted something that wasn't allowed, how can I get all pissy when I knew it when I moved here? It actually gives me more confidence that I didn't spend a lot of money on a house only to have some idiot move in next door and paint his house pink.
I know if I want to do something off the wall, I'm going to have to move. That's a decision I made when I purchased. Now if they put an HOA in after the fact, that's one thing. But that's really never the case.

I just feel like HOAs are unnecessary. I feel like property values alone are enough to keep the neighborhoods looking relatively harmonious. HOAs just seem like a means for old ladies to bitch about their neighbor's grass being a centimeter too high.
Not an HOA but I wasn't informed of my restrictive covenant when I bought the house. I would've bought it anyway, but I didn't know it existed until a nice old lady was kind enough to print one off for me and drop it off to my house

If you hear a motor burning through the hood during your shift tonight, consider it a warning shot.

People ask this question?
But yea, that sign just shows that an HOA is basically just insurance against dumb neighbors, I'm good with that.

quote:Sure they have many of those.
2)Good neighborhoods where this doesnt happen
Problem is, when you move into one, it may look pretty and pristine but all it takes is that 1 shitty neighbor, and you simply don't known if he/she's already there or going to show up and buy the house next to you after you purchase your house. And without an HOA, they can get away with a few things that can make things pretty miserable for you at worst, or just have your surrounding neighborhood or houses looking pretty trashy with no repercussions at your disposal.
Insurance against shitty neighbors.

Don’t wanna read the monthly minutes? Wanna get caught off guard and pretend like you didn’t have a clue? Like you said, be prepared.
Or maybe, I don't know, post a speed limit sign, what a novel idea.
This BRgetthenet sounds like the HOA President that gives HOAs a bad rep.

All it takes is multi-generational families with multi-generational resources to purchase a home that would be otherwise out of their reach. If they don't feel the same way about home upkeep as you, you're hosed without a HOA.

I don't know. I guess I'm just not so bothered about what other people do unless it is something egregious (ie burning a brush pile in their front yard). None of my family have ever lived in a neighborhood with an HOA and outside of a couple hoses here and that that looked to be falling into disrepair, I thought the neighborhoods were great and just haven't had any problems.

I can tell you why.
I live in a 'hood with houses between $285 and $400K. Across the street from me a guy parked an old car in his driveway and put a tarp over it. His plan in December was to let it sit until he could get it up and running "sometime this summer." HOA hit him with a lien threat and amazingly he hauled three truck and trailer loads of crap out of his garage to make room for the car covered with a tarp.
I'd prefer not to have an HOA tell me I can't have a portable b-ball goal in front driveway, but I'll deal with it to not have folks trashing up the place and killing my resale value.

The audacity of that man!
Stories like this and I can't help but feel like the only people who really like HOAs are uppity.

The problem with HOA's is that the well-intentioned people who usually form them, are usually not the people who end up running them. HOA boards are generally stocked with narcissists and spinsters who have too much time on their hands. People who lead otherwise unimportant lives who need a forum to exert control over others under the veil of the HOA contract. They have little to no understanding of the covenants and restrictions or their legal operation, and thus they make emotional and dumb decisions that can end up costing the membership alot of money in litigation costs and usually for petty personal BS. The good people in the HOA generally do not run for the board because they have real lives and jobs.

Sorry broseph. If someone wants to have a chunk land and let cars rust out all over the place get after it. But when someone lives about 30 yards across the street that isn't cool.
