I was in NO last weekend. I think the historical sites/tours/museums would have appealed to me (if I had time during the day). I would visit again to do that. The food was good, I wasn’t blown away but obviously there are hundreds of other restaurants to try.
The FQ at night could have easily been mistaken for a 3rd world country. The streets were filthy and smelled like sewage. I have zero desire to go back to NO for the night life...

Officers HEARD the shots fired.
There are a ton of cops (local and state) in the FQ especially this time of year. Somebody grabbed a gun off of a security officer and fired it. Took seconds. Unless you have an officer every 10 feet, not sure how you can prevent.
This one isn't the fault of the police, or the city. It's the fault of the guy who grabbed a gun from a security officer. Secondly, I think we can ask if it's a good idea for that security guard to have a gun. What was their training, etc. How did the perp get it?

What really really really happened is the mafia all but pulled out on the 80's.

Given the sheer volume of people in the relatively small area- last years gun stats are pretty solid. Just a couple incidents and only one not closed (due to an uncooperative victim). That it’s a residential neighborhood and not simply a tourist attraction makes it tough to regulate. Generally they’ve recently done well though.

I guess they’d rather Bourbon St. to be more like Main St. in Walt Disney World but with beignets and hurricanes.

Times Square was a notorious cesspool pool full of sleazy strip clubs, junkies, and criminals not that long ago. There is hope for the FQ. The problem is NOLA doesn’t have someone like Rudy Giuliani anywhere near the mayor’s office.
Competent and focused leadership can make a huge difference.

How did Rudy clean it up? By cracking skulls, which is what, of all people, Morial did. Both in the 90s.
If Rudy today, did that, NYC would be dealing with a consent decree as well.

It is funny how “crime” is supposed to be accepted as just “extra spice” when it come to NOLA.
