Who the hell is out at 3:15 in the morning.
45 YO white male, overweight, frequent visitor to Nola and early riser that likes people watching and eating fried dough covered in powdered sugar.
Last trip to FQ @ 4:am, made it two blocks down bourbon before deciding it would be best for me to turn back.

The difference is that throughout recent history that element was kept away from the FQ / tourisf areas through deliberate efforts of the NOPD.
I was told by an oldtimer that used to have a bar in the FQ that back in the 50s and 60s that a lot of the bars were owned by or connected to the Mafia, and they had a lot to do with keeping crime out of the area.

This is why I don’t really mess with Bourbon too much any more. Streets are too arrow and the people that want to shoot don’t give a shite and will just let it spray.
frick all that.
frick all that.

Bourbon sucks
The rest of the quarter is pretty awesome. Royal St is the single best strip of street in New Orleans

The FQ is a pretty small area that should be able to be made safe with a robust police presence.
I visited Times Square a few years ago and was walking around at midnight on a Friday. It was still packed at that hour and the thought crossed my mind that terrorism or some other crime could easily occur in that space.
But I never felt unsafe because NYPD was everywhere.
It didn’t detract from the experience to have them around.
NOPD should be stationed at every corner and patrolling the streets in big numbers.
Now at 3:15am? Probably not going to have a significant police presence at that hour.
