These threads inevitably devolve into a discussion / OT argument over what has changed to make the FQ so dangerous along with the ever helpful and enlightening “New Orleans is a shithole” posts.

The latter are tirelessly stupid.

As to the real question, what has changed to make this a common occurrence, I like to point this out. There has always been a dangerous and lawless component to New Orleans. Literally since the city was founded. It was pirates and brigands a couple of hundred years ago and it is New Orleans East gang members now. The difference is that throughout recent history that element was kept away from the FQ / tourisf areas through deliberate efforts of the NOPD. When I was growing up, it was well known that getting stupid in the vicinity of Bourbon or any other tourist area would get your skull cracked along with a trip to the OPP. There was a noticeable difference in police treatment uptown or elsewhere in the city. You just flat did not frick with officers in the FQ. They were on practically every block of Bourbon and I remember the most serious incidents being the occasional pick pocket or Drunken Fist fight.

What changed was the Consent Decree, body cameras, cell phone cameras and loud concern over “police brutality” leading to the lawless elements being emboldened to creep into the area. Did I like the fact that NOPD was brutal and routinely violated people’s rights? No. But it worked. As it stands now, I tell people not to cross Canal after dark. It’s a damn shame that tourists can’t enjoy Bourbon without worrying about getting shot. It won’t change until NOPD is given blanket authority to kick arse and that will never happen. The cat is out of the bag and I don’t see how it can be put back in.

New Orleans=shithole.
