My son and DIL are both at DC band 1 law firms, my son is a 5th year associate and his wife is a 4th year year at a different firm. They are closing on a house in Fairfax at the end of the month. While neither has any student loan debt I worry about them taking on so much house debt because assuming they both make partner they will be up to their eyeballs in debt because they will almost certainly have to borrow the majority of their equity buy-in. The ROI is extremely high but they will be sitting under crushing debt right about the time they start to have kids.

My adult children are:
Retail management (great ESOP company), makes decent money but his retirement track is amazing. He started young enough with them and with their valuation growth his package will be great. He has about two years of college - hated taking classes he didn’t like. Went into college with a 1680 SAT.
Second oldest - Aerospace, aeronautical, and something else engineer for Boeing. Doing pretty well. Just bought his first house about 8 months ago in Charleston - new construction. His wife stays at home with my granddaughter.
Third oldest - Spec Ops aviation in the Army. Money is t great but he gets to travel the world, see great places, meet interesting people and kill them. He bought his first home a year ago. It’s an older home bear Ft. Campbell. Nice but nothing extravagant.

How much is the buy in at a major law firm?

When I was at Big 4 I think it was $250-500k. Would expect a law firm to be higher.

4 children
2 plant engineers
1 teacher
1 just out of college
None live in LA any longer and the oldest 3 have all rolled equity quickly into their second house. Started small and moved to a larger home. Youngest still rents because he lives in a large city and wants no part of the burbs.

Oldest is in med school in BHM. He and some friends rent a 4-BR house in Homewood. Will start residency in June of 2026. My middle child is in Auburn’s Speech Pathology Master’s program and will graduate in May of 2025. She lives with our youngest in our condo in Auburn. The youngest is engaged to be married next June and is in Auburn’s undergrad education program and will also graduate in May of 2025. So, none of them are making any money right now, but we will have them mostly off our payroll in the not-too-distant future.
