1. Went to the store and bought stuff or actually ordered from the catalog where you filled out the order form and mailed it in with a check or money order for payment.
2. You made plans with friends and showed up....on time. If not your arse got left behind.
3. We didn’t argue with our SOs at work. That waited until we got home. That way the neighbors were in the loop.

Cruising was really popular
Yes it was. Before Grindr, CL(rip) and Scruff, you had to drive around known spots to find some random dicks to diddle. AL Pacino was great in this movie about it.

Yeah, those stomping grounds pretty much place you at one of those two. I actually fell in with a bunch of VCHS 90 guys in Lafayette, been running with them for 20+ years now. It was right after you, but if you remember Pound Hound it’s those guys and all their buddies.

Ordered an in-dash AM/FM Cassette player from Sears. The truck came to our town’s catalog store on Tuesday. I was at that fricking store every Tuesday for over six weeks waiting on my stereo. Times was hard back then.
Used to order motorcycle gear out of the back of magazines. Either mail a check with order or call in with parent’s credit card.
Got an Escort radar detector in the 80s. Mailed in a check and waited forever.
Amazon Prime is fricking Instant compared to back then. But we never dreamed of anything better so didn’t complain much.

Walmart
The mall
Target
Toys R Us
We made plans at school then called each other at home on the landline right before leaving to meet up. In large groups if someone left to go to another party, we had a rule (I’m female) that if you we’re leaving with someone else you had to tell the designated driver/person you rode with that you were leaving with “so and so” to go to “xyz”
When big crowds decided to move the party- someone would yell “hey! We are going to move this party to Xyz.” Word would then spread by mouth. & The rich kids had car phones, so that was handy sometimes.
No arguing while at work
You still shouldn’t argue at work

That had a place called Spencer's that had everything you needed. They could Pierce your ears too.

Malls and the glorious ability to disappear and no one could find you. Leave house at 10am Saturday morning and return at 1am Sunday morning and maybe have to call mom twice to "check in" that you were ok and alive. Glorious freedom as a high school age kid with a car and no cell phone leash.

Stores and catalogs.

Also, how did you know how to find your friends to hang out without cellphones?
We used our brains and either planned ahead or called folks at their houses on things called "telephones."

And how would you quietly argue with your spouse while at work without texting?
Call her and whisper.

This thread is dumb but one thing that always amazes me is back in the day people would order stuff and it would take 8-10 weeks for delivery. Really. Two months!
Yeah if you were a western settler ordering from the pony express

Damn straight. Part of it was that there was no expectation of immediacy, no concept of Amazon or GPSs. Ignorance truly is bliss. Maybe thats why everyone is so damn unhappy

Well youngsters, back in the day, the wife never called me at work. That wasn’t a thing and employers made a point of keeping personal calls at a. Minimum and zero was best. I knew where friends were so no need to text. Bought stuff in person at a store or from a catalogue and mailed in an order on a form. And, always took a shite on company time and premises.

Used to fill out an order and mail with check through Spiegel catalogue. High quality American made merchandise, especially clothing. Usually a couple of weeks for deliver.
As far as plans with friends, everybody in the history of the world managed without the cell phone before 30 years ago.

Small towns had actual general merchandise stores back then. You could pretty much get what you wanted come Christmas as you'd been looking at that one toy all year long hoping you'd get it or it's still be there. Western Auto was a huge part of our upbringing along with a dozen variety stores in town
My mother and one of her friends would travel to a city either 50 or 100 miles away to make a yearly trek to Sears for Christmas shopping. Every other year or so Mom would go that same city on our birthday so we could pick out a gift.
If a mower, tiller, or whatever broke down and needed a special part, you had to order it and wait for weeks usually.
As for getting somewhere on time, knowing where to be, etc., you planned ahead. Problem was, many of us had old modes of transportation and most of them had may-pop tires. I remember many times my friends and I buying a Coke bottle full of gas by pooling our money. It was rare to ever buy more than $2 worth of gas at any time.

We went shopping. There were many more places to shop back then. The internet destroyed that experience. Friends made plans in advance using their home phones. If someone didn’t show up for a get together, we called them using a pay phone. Life was much simpler and more enjoyable. People actually communicated.
