re: Old people, what did you used to do to get stuff before Amazon?

You made a plan and hoped that it worked out. If you went to the bar and your friends weren't there yet you just talked to other people because everyone wasn't staring at their phone terrified of someone making eye contact.
Imagine calling a bar from a payphone and asking the bartender if your friends are there? That was a valid concept before cell phones.
We also had answering machines and knew how to call them when away from home to check messages. So your friends would leave you VMs knowing you're out and would check your messages.
We managed.
As far as ordering stuff, we used catalogs and ordered by phone and paid the delivery guy via check or cash on delivery. You could pay by credit cards by ordering stuff from Sears or Wards catalogs by phone but going to the store to pick it up and run the card.
It was very similar to the online experience now just alot slower.

And the bartender knowing when to say whether you were really there or not

Reminds me of parents leaving a list of all the numbers of places they might be at on the fridge.

Speaking of fricking Amazon. Look at this package we got today. I don't remember ever getting anything like this from Sears

You would buy stuff at the store (crazy concept, I know). Radio Shack was the “go to” store for obscure cables, batteries, adapters, etc. Kaybee toys or toys-r-us for games and toys not available at TG+Y and later Walmart. Appliances and tires at Sears. Tools at the local true value hardware store.
To find your friends, make plans beforehand or just cruise the strip and meet up with them.
Before cellphones, if a spouse called their husband/wife at work, someone had died or was in the hospital.

Went to the store when it was open and bought stuff.

how did you know how to find your friends to hang out without cellphones?
You'd talk to a couple of friends on the phone, talk it over at school about where you would hang out that night. For example, there may have been someone whose parents were out of town and were going to have a party.
We may meet up at a typical shopping center parking lot to talk.

how would you quietly argue with your spouse while at work without texting?
All the better, you could legitimately forget about your spouse during the work day.
Most of the time, the time away healed whatever bitching that had been going on in the first place.

And you know how much condoms cost? Nothing, because we didn't need em.

shite. They had us in a near panic over HIV back then.

Cruising was really popular. Kids would hang out at certain places and you and friends would drive around listening to music going from place to place. It was fricking fantastic. It wasn't uncommon to make a weekend out of it.

My dad had me sufficiently terrified to get a girl pregnant when I was younger. I always carried a condom. I think I still had that same one until freshman year in college though.

I was just finishing the quote for him. It's a quote by Willie Nelson in the movie Half baked.

It was some makeup my wife ordered. She took a picture of it because half of the stuff was broken. They've hired a bunch of former taco bell employees to deliver from their new distribution center in BR for the holidays it seems.

My wife said some lady with 3 kids in the car delivered our stuff the other day. Supposedly it's just random people like Uber for the holiday surge.

Hell yeah
There were certain hangouts or parties we would stop at, to see who was there and what was happening.
