My dad had heart surgery in 78 I think, I remember his heart surgeon coming into the room with a lit cigarette and telling my dad he had to quit smoking.

Everybody smoked everywhere. That's why there were way less fatties than we have today.

I can't go back farther than that, but it was shockingly common in the 70s...every office was full of smokers and there was just a constant haze in the air. airplanes were just terrible, as all of the air was recirculated.

fwiw, in the real old days, they thought smoking was the cure for tuberculosis...people who caught it would be locked away in a sanatorium and made to smoke day and night.

Ha ha, yeah, good memories making those ashtrays in art class or crafts time in cub scouts. Nowadays that would probably be worse than a kid fashioning a crack pipe.

I remember my uncle telling me about how you could smoke in the Superdome in the 70's (maybe into the 80's) and by the of the game there would be this big, hazy cloud at the top of the dome.

up until the early 1970's airlines would give you a pack of cigarettes with your meal and there would be a pack of cigarettes in every C-ration accessory pack (both were 4 cigarettes in a pack)

Yep, smoking in the mission control room full of electronics. Hell, I'm surprised Buzz Aldrin didn't light one up before stepping on the moon.

It was hard to find a non smoking area of a restaurant, if they even had one.
I remember my high school (we're talking 1980's) wouldn't allow smoking in the football stadium during games, but you could outside the bleachers, behind the stadium, etc. People would line up there chugging away during any break in the game.
Cigarette vending machines were on the streets.
I recall the cheapest I paid for a pack of smokes was 39 cents. Kroger "cost cutter" brand.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's, and my parents' generation for the most part didn't smoke.

But *their* parents smoked like millenials have sex. It wasn't uncommon for someone to have a favorite ashtray or give one as a holiday gift.

Even in the 70's most restaurants had ashtrays at every table.

I'm 39

I remember going to the Bayou Magazin in Chauvin and buying cigs for my PawPaw. He would give us $2 and we had money left over for candy.

You use to be able to smoke in hospitals as long as you stayed in the hall if they were on oxygen.

In the 90s restaurants still allowed smoking. i worked at a fast food place in high school and everyone smoked freely inside. I remember riding in the car with my grandma in the 80s while she smoked with the windows up and it wasn't a big deal.

I was a kid in the 80's, I always bought my dad a pack of cigarettes at the convenience store without any questions asked.

Yep. My old man didn't start smoking until he was in the Army and got them with his rations.

Eta: you have no idea how nasty airplanes smelled.

It's honestly hard for me to comprehend that smoking was ever ok on an airplane. It just seems inconsiderate as frick to do it. That doesn't even get into the health concerns on it.
