Wife and I gutted then renovated then full timed in a Class C 2018-mid 2020. We work in IT and have been fully remote and traveling the last 3 years with our dogs while working. Mid 2020 when the RV boom took off because of Covid we received an offer for ours that was well over twice what we had in it total so we sold it and bought a Transit.
We’re about 80% through with our Transit conversion. It’s a High Roof Extended AWD; we’ve done everything ourselves so far but this is also not our first time. We have around $12k in it not counting the price of the van; most of that being electrical. We have 600ah of LifePo4, 3000w Xantrex Inverter, hot and cold water and a 36x24 wet bath inside (shower and toilet together). 2.5” VC lift and 32” Ridge Grapplers. Fully insulated with 2 layers of 1.5” polyiso every square inch; used a couple hundred sq ft of sound deadening throughout as well. Queen sized bed on actuators that lifts to the ceiling during the day, drops down at night for us to sleep on.
The traveling part is great, but honestly the building phase is my favorite part knowing it’s “ours” since we designed and built everything ourselves.

I've really been watching a lot of videos on sprinter vans. This place in Boulder rents them for like $230 a day. I'm paying almost that for a wrangler and the van is also a place to sleep. So next trip I'm Ubering to go rent a van for sure. Unless I have the kids.

I drag my teardrop camper all over the damn place. Much cheaper way of doing the off the grid thing.

I’d rather have a built Jeep and an Offroad trailer. That way you can set up camp, unhitch and take your vehicle out to explore. I came across a cool aluminum pop up trailer that can also haul some dirt bikes or a 4Wheeler. It’s a minimalistic toy hauler. Check out AntiShanty Trailers.

I wish it didn't take me so long to realize that a truck camper is the best all around situation.
My camper is much nicer and has a slide out.

How easy is it to remove? Just drop the stands and drive away?

Once you've got it down you can unload and load in 15 min tops.
I do it in 10 currently but then I spend 5 min double and triple checking everything.
But yeah, it's easy. You just have to pay attention.
So far, I've taken it out 3 times, the only thing a sprinter or other van has on me is speed. I don't go faster than 65.
But in terms of space, comfort, amenities and being a bit cheaper than some setups those vans have nothing on me. I'm into my truck, camper, and accessories for the truck to haul the camper about 66k. I also can use my truck for lots of things when not on the road while a van cannot.
I've got a 2013 1 ton Chevy Duramax crew cab and a 2015 Arctic Fox 990.
Eta... it's a 4 season camper as well for year round fun. Most vans will waste a lot of propane trying to keep up with temps in the teens. My situation is very efficient.

These 2 have caught my attention:
Black Series HQ19
Airstream Basecamp 20x
Both around $50k MSRP.

I dream of having one of those for elk hunting
I love my Davis wall tent for elk hunting too much to go to a camper, though when I am pounding stakes at 11,000 feet on day one a camper is tempting. The wood stove and tent experience is just too much of a part of the camp for me.

Do you still have a home or did you sell it and just travel with the wife? Do you have any pets?
