I'm 42 and we have a 5-month old son.

ETA: our first and last one.

I was 42 and 44 yrs old when two kids were born. Saps the energy out of you, but it's worth it. My wife was 9 yrs younger than me (married at 39), so I was guaranteed to be the oldest Dad at every baseball, softball and basketball game! Just got used to it. It's important to stay fit, so you can run around with them when they are between 7-14.
It's also important to not put pressure on the kids regarding doing things for you when you get older. I will be 70 when my kids will be 28 and 26. They will be figuring out their own adult lives. No reason to have them do things for you.

but be aware 40+ looks old as frick when you show up for tee ball practice with Braylynn, and the other dads are 30.

I'm mid-40s and coach a youth soccer team, and I'm the most energetic person out there, field or sidelines.

Great advice. It's important to be healthy in general of course to have more years with them but maintaining some level of fitness to keep up and do things with them (such as sports) as they grow should probably be a high priority for us older parents.

Close. I was 39. First one was planned with money saved up (teacher insurance sucks), both cars paid off, and no debt except the mortgage. Second one was a surprise. Got the news three notes into a new car and after spending a good bit of savings on house upgrades. I don't have the energy I had for the first one, and it shows.

When my 2nd was born last year I was 50 with a 2yo and a newborn.

Tubes were tied!

A little tidbit: if you want time to game, shower, eat, shite, frick or watch tv, don't have 2 kids in 2 years unless you are retired.

Experience has been amazing and positively like changing but it obviously has it challenges. I wouldn't change anything but I tell my boys everyday when I change their diapers that soon it will be their turn to change mine.

I had a blast and partied hard for two decades in my 20s and 30s - best time of my life. I was ready to slow it down by my late 30s. Had a kid at 40 - once again, having the time of my life with the little rugrat. We’ll see how it goes but so far so good - I wouldn’t do anything differently.

There was a middle manager at my company in a different department I sort of knew who was recently laid off and had a kid 57 years old.

I work with a guy that had his first kid in his early 60s. To each their own but the odds aren't in his favor that he'll ever see that kid become an adult.

40 for the first and 43 for the second. Wife wants another but I can't go through the newborn phase again.

Definitely one of the older dads, but I'm amazed at how sloppy some of the younger ones are. They look like shite at 30 so I can only imagine how bad it will be when they're my age.

I will say the kids aged the hell out of me though. Just looking back at pics the year before kids I look so much younger. Sleep deprivation is rough.

Now that both of mine sleep through the night and I get regular sleep, I feel a lot better.

It's just the first two years that are brutal. I'm pretty fit though and they're keeping me young and honestly, without them, I don't know what I'd be doing. Don't have many hobbies and they keep me busy.

It's lots of fun and nothing beats being their hero.

I think it's a lot more common now to have kids mid 30s to 40s than it used to be. I have zero desire to have another one and haven't for some time but that would have me raising kids for over 40 years too

the trend is later and later but it’s definitely easier in everything but finances the younger you are.

You don’t think maturity is also an important factor? There’s definitely a sweet spot between too young and too old. IMO, having a kid at 20 is worse than having a kid at 40. I was 33 when we had our first.

I agree that 40 is better than 20 but there are always exceptions and pros and cons.

Think 32 would have been ideal for me. Eight years late but oh well

I’m 36 and don’t have kids yet, but we will. To be honest, I’m pretty encouraged reading through this thread. The cynic in me expected a lot of responses opposite to these. Cheers to all the Dads and Moms out there doin’ your own damn thing and enjoying family life.
