I am glad SWB is stating taxes won't need to be increased ever if St. George doesn't pass. No new taxes for BR.

Using this, it would seem that the EBR school millage as well as the city tax millages would no longer be paid by St. George.
St. George doesn't pay the city millages now, but most are paying into one of the special districts for St. George or East Side Fire, which are both higher.

Go to the tax assessor’s web site and they have all of the millages.

Well said. It’s good to see you speak truth to power.

Please show us some hard data where those taxes have been raise exclusively in those areas and not in their surrounding communities.

That was actually a very good and balanced article on it. Well done NYT
No fricking shite. You folks in NBR can no longer leech off the SG area where they get jack shite in return for their tax dollars.

It amazes me how many times this has been discussed in national publications
It's a pretty rare issues, especially with the number of people affected.
New cities are rare these days... especially new cities that would instantly become one of the largest in the state.

Plans for the city call for a lean operation: The parish’s Sheriff’s Department would police it and it would continue to rely on other parish services. A mayor and five-person council would be appointed by the governor
So the new Governor?

I’m impressed! They wrote an entire article and didn’t claim racism once!
They just lost a subscriber with Dayne "BUY MY BOOK" Sherman. One of my favorite "don't you know who I am" type people around here. He's known to block out anything contrarian to his opinion. He'd troll St George articles yet lives two parishes away.

I’m getting better. It’s a process. I used to think I was a good ally but then I learned I was only drowning out black voices and dominating the conversation from my white perspective. Sometimes you just have to shut up and listen. Lift up black voices, especially black femme voices. They are the creators of humanity and have special powers. I no longer expect black people to educate me. That’s not fair to them as they battle for their lives LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE DAY in a system designed to kill them. I educate myself now by reading black authors in hopes that I can someday help in any capacity needed.

If Rispone somehow becomes governor, St George should flourish. If not, he will eventually be mayor of St George. It just makes too much sense.

Pretty easily, actually

That is a good question.
My thought is that Sloth can’t appoint anyone if BR et all are trying to tie it up in court and debate its legitimacy.
The next governor could probably go ahead and do that once there is a summary judgement against BR for using blatantly disproven legal arguments (home rule charter) to try and overrule the state constitution.

Most good people are too smart to run for office. Who wants to deal with the b.s.? The good ones that are elected don't last because of the b.s.
All political offices should be one term.

I'm very uneducated on this topic, but why is this? Seems ripe for corruption.
Is there a reason they wouldn't hold elections? Would this mayor and council just be briefly serving until elections could be held?

Bc elections are via statute, and those statutes state certain days for voting. The governor would appoint interim council and mayor until elections can be held as required by the law.
This is no different than the Governor using his power to fill a vacancy when an elected official is removed, dies, or resigns.
