BATON ROUGE, La. — Their plan to create a new independent school district failed. And then it failed again. But the residents of an unincorporated area southeast of Baton Rouge were undeterred. This time, they hatched an idea to establish a city of their own
quote:

St. George supporters cite a litany of frustrations, with complaints about underperforming schools chief among them. They said their other worries include inadequate drainage systems that make their neighborhoods more prone to flooding and roadways that are so clogged that the traffic feels more like driving in Los Angeles than Louisiana. In their view, their tax dollars could be spent closer to home, and not spread across the 470 square-mile parish. (“Our Independence Day is coming,” organizers posted on their Facebook page.)

quote:

The Advocate, Baton Rouge’s newspaper, published an editorial that described it as an effort that “seems more driven by passion than pragmatism.” Local government officials and business leaders have portrayed incorporation as an unwise endeavor that stands to bring about financial uncertainty and increased taxes, all while leaving St. George residents just as exasperated as they were before. “That’s going to be a rude awakening for a lot of people,” said Sharon Weston Broome, who, as mayor-president, oversees the municipal government in Baton Rouge as well as that of East Baton Rouge Parish.

quote:

Plans for the city call for a lean operation: The parish’s Sheriff’s Department would police it and it would continue to rely on other parish services. A mayor and five-person council would be appointed by the governor

The incorporation effort is getting more national attention from a left-leaning news outlet. To their credit, it’s not as ridiculous and emotion-driven as article in The Atlantic.

Probably the most even handed article ever written on the subject. Although, they probably should have qualified Broome’s statement by mentioning that she is a blithering moron.

I’m impressed! They wrote an entire article and didn’t claim racism once!

Look, I’m wondering this - how do we reach the youths of Baton Rouge without the St. George tax base? Midnight basketball and SLAM poetry doesn’t pay for itself

St George is coming. Either get behind it or get out of the way

I heard the PSA on the radio trying to kill the St George deal. I’m sure they will make it work if they can pull it off. People like the mayor just dont want to lose their money .

The only real difference will be more property taxes similar to what is paid in Ascension, Zachary and Central.
It will be sticker shock but you just roll it into your mortgage and pay it through that.
They won't like it, especially the old timers but it's what you need to have decent schools. It's why Ascension schools are what they are.

We first have to recognize that Baton Rouge was built through the lens of white supremacists. I agree that we need a new government, but not St. George. It has to be one where black people are given equal representation and power. And by power, I mean money. Tax dollars from white families should be going to black families. White and have a nice home? Maybe give it to an up and coming young queen. Monthly stipends to black families definitely need to be part of the conversation. Will it undo all the evils of a white supremacist system? No! But it’s a start.

Bro, she's coming around. I heard she attended a Trump rally but didn't believe it until I saw this

Was midnight basketball and SLAM poetry a real thing proposed?

What does SLAM poetry even mean?

EBR MIllage Rates

Using this, it would seem that the EBR school millage as well as the city tax millages would no longer be paid by St. George. That's over 50% of property taxes.

It stands to reason that St. George could institute the exact same millages (or maybe even less) to maintain a school district and a few city services.

I'm actually quite surprised the NYT didn't mention that St. George is full of Klan members trying to establish the Fourth Reich.

St George should have more revenue created by other taxes than Central or Zachary

Considering property values could increase a large amount, I doubt anyone will care besides old people that have houses paid off.

The article OP mentions in The Atlantic is definitely where they do this. I read it this morning

It amazes me how many times this has been discussed in national publications.
