One of the examples sited is when a school in the northeast wanted to redraw district lines, well-connected parents help protests and tried to fight it. It still passed, their motives were questioned as being petty.

Also, protests are no bueno now?

Yet, economic segregation, which is more pronounced among families with children, also creates public school districts where affluent families predominate. This can lead to trouble in schools, but of a distinct kind. Motivated by a fierce desire to protect their children and themselves from difficulty, and armed with a robust sense of entitlement as well as ample economic, cultural and social resources, affluent parents can create conflict and interfere with school districts on a scale that is rarely acknowledged.

Heaven forbid they want to send their kids to schools where parents and teachers care.

I read that article this morning. Gentrification of schools doesn't seem any different than gentrification of neighborhoods.

All public schools should be equal, or generally equal.

I mostly read the Guardian for news, but I occasionally get the NYT on my news feed.

That’s on the community of families who are in that district. You can’t just take from the nicer ones. Fix your own shite.

Let's bring everybody down to the ghetto level so it's all "equal"

Is this referring to the phenomenon of making sure your kid has the best opportunities? I'm pretty sure good parents have been doing that since the beginning of time.

While yes I agree if I was a parent and they wanted to redraw a district that hurt my child's opportunity in anyway, I would fight it too.

That's kind of like saying, "you need to make my child better, because I won't"

All schools should have a baseline quality. There should be a law enacted that prevents a group of people who funnel additional dollars of their own to improve their local schools.

I'm trying to count the ways people can label communist ideologies without calling them "communism" and it's really quite impressive

"opportunity hoarding" is a new one

Another fine example of implementing a theory/initiative without any regard to rational human behavior.

It is not rational to think humans would willingly "downgrade" their child's education without resistance.

People laughed a few years ago when that Australia study/whatever said that reading to your kids was a sign of privilege and you shouldn't do it so much because it creates a disadvantage for poor kids

We're really not far off from that being a relatively mainstream view.

Exactly. And then to act like what they did was a bad thing.

Protecting your child is a bad thing.

The article is right. Public schools would unequivocally be better if private schools didn't exist. You'd have an influx of parents and students who care more than average.

However, blaming them for the problems that originally led to poor public schools is absurd.

Equal opportunities or equal outcomes?

Because public schools in this country are an embarrassment of riches.

Lower income districts clearly have economic obstacles to create "equal" schools. It is time to share the wealth (here, I'd think we would need some type of property tax surcharge).

It's weird that you would call inattentive parents and juvenile delinquents "economic obstacles."
