Kids in the inner city. How can you have equal opportunity when your school system doesn't offer 1/10 that of the big wealthy schools?

I bet you're one of those people that think the inner city occupants are too stupid to find polling stations too, aren't you?

You ever heard of Abbeville, LA. That's where I'm from. In 2016 the poverty rate was 29% (nearly 2 1/2 times the national rate) with a median household income less than $30,000. The population of Abbeville, LA is 44.9% Black, 43.8% White, and 6.02% Asian. 17.5% of the people in Abbeville, LA speak a non-English language, and 97% are U.S. citizens. Source

In my high school graduating class of just over 100 students (there's only one public high school in Abbeville), we have pharmacists, physical therapists, accountants, teachers, nurses, and engineers. Most of us grew up in some level of the lower income demographic, and never once were any of us lead to believe that because we didn't have money we didn't have opportunity. We were taught to work hard to break the cycles the previously lazy arse generations had created. Telling people they don't have the opportunity to succeed only serves one purpose. To convince them that you can be their savior by providing that opportunity thus indebting them to you come next election.

That’s on the community of families who are in that district. You can’t just take from the nicer ones. Fix your own shite.

That's the biggest thing people who argue this shite do not understand when it comes to the problems with our schools. It's the parenting, much, much more than the teachers.

So why take those troublesome, parent enabled students and pump them into the schools where the parents and students care. It's stupid and irresponsible, and it is happening all the time. I can point to some districts in Louisiana where this practice has completely destroyed a district that was functioning just fine prior to the action.

It's not just in LA. When I graduated from my my HS back in 1996, it was one of the top public schools in the state. Then they started busing students. Students of a certain cultural persuasion.

This past year my former HS has now dropped to a low "C" grade after multiple years of lower and lower grades.

They didn't help the students they bused in. They ruined a once top-tier public school.

Vouchers will never become commonplace for a very pragmatic reason - good students would flee low performing public schools and no one wants to deal with that aftermath.

But, the public schools, which have a virtual monopoly now, will have to compete for voucher money. That's the beauty of capitalism. The market is smarter than all of us, ultimately.

But, the teachers' unions

They took a big hit today. You should be happy about that.

Gentrification actually benefits the original residents more than harms them. In fact, there was a very informative piece on this on the economist the other day backed up with hard facts with each assertion.

When people tell me gentrification is a bad thing, I immediately know they’re stupid. And I very rarely use that word to describe people.

well they say it is bad because they are renting from the slum lord and dont own there.

Schools, at least in Louisiana, are funded equally.

This bullshite claim about low funding is ... well, bullshite.

The per student spending in some of the poorest districts in America, such as DC, is among the highest in the world.

There is no lack of funding problem in the USA.

Absolutely true, especially when it comes to federal funds. That money is literally poured into low performing schools.

Every academic study on busing students says that was a failure.

I dont' get it. Don't black people get their own colleges but they get pissed when the 'good parents' want to pull their kids out of their schools.

It's indisputable, but blame the courts and judges. Their enforcement of desegregation lawsuits is the dagger. Sadly, those who often bring these lawsuits have no personal stake in the outcome.

why don't liberals ever try to elevate their constituents' attitudes and abilities instead of trying to lower the bar and standards for everyone?

Well yes, but success of the students was never a real consideration.

Because the former is hard, and the latter is easy.

The latter also results in increased power for them.

Best political song ever

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
And they're quite convinced they're right
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade?

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream 'oppression!'
And the oaks, just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet,
Axe,
And saw
