I saw a lot of discussion of this topic in the fat wife thread. Came across this article last week. OP will probably cite this one for a while...

quote:

In the book, released last month, Kearney points out a rather obvious fact: Children raised by two parents have a much higher chance of success than those raised by one. Yet she goes even further to argue that whether parents are married or not impacts their children's success.

quote:

"There are a lot of folks who are uncomfortable with the idea of prioritizing one family type over another," says Kearney, whose research and work as an economist at the University of Maryland focuses on issues that most would consider progressive: poverty, inequality, family and children.

"I'm not prioritizing one. I'm just recognizing the data and the evidence and the reality."

These opinions are problematic. We must cancel this Kearney person immediately. Single parent homes are the way of the future. It takes a village.

She was on a freakanomics podcast episode a few weeks back and it was insightful but not surprising. She basically called people out for not admitting it’s an actual problem.

Strange, I've heard this before. Seems we were shouted down repeatedly...

Takes two dedicated parents. Hell with the village. It's full of perverts.

I don't remember my mom or dad ever getting on the phone requesting villagers come by for parenting help

If you go to villages where they live a collective existence you'll find no one is watching the children.

Clearly racist sexist and transphobic and part of the Conservative Nazi evil strategy to destroy the under served community and establish a toxic male Christian theocracy.

There are some single parent households whose children have the same outcomes of two-parent households: those with single dads.

Single Father Households Do Vastly Better Than Single Mother Households

quote:

Children raised by two parents have a much higher chance of success

Doesn't everyone know this already?

These stats are like BMI, people think they only apply to the others and that their situation is the exception

It’s okay to say that two parent homes lead to better outcomes for children, but mothers can’t just will deadbeats into being there after the kids are born, can’t just have kids with the stable guys they don’t want to do so with, and children have no choice in the matter…

Shocked the liberal leaning NPR would publish a story such as this.

Listened to a radio broadcast probably 3-4 years ago stating the same thing. Had a panel on, were stating black kids raised by 2 parents are just as successful as anyone else. White kids raised by 1 parent were just a tad less likely to get in a lot of trouble as a black kid raised by 1.

If black parents both raised their child there’d be much less crime and poverty in the black community. They even went on and discussed how a dad dying from say a heart attack, wreck, etc, the child has a much better chance of a decent life than one with a dad who walked out on the family, chose drugs, street life. Screws up a kid’s psyche knowing mom or dad chose fun or pretending to be a gangsta over the kid

They've been researching this subject for 60 years that I know of. The evidence is staggering - kids require a mother & a father in the home.

Except if the mom gets fat. Then the kids are better off with dad free to chase younger and fitter tail.

And men raise better children than women, yet they have the upper hand in family court.

Divorce is the most selfish thing parents can do unless there is a real reason. There, I said it.

EVERY single child of divorced parents who has ever come to my house has some kind of issue. It's exhausting because everyone has to join the drama of the dysfunctional family. And most of the time, the divorce is just a bunch of petty bull.

On top of that, I don't have one friend from a broken home who doesn't have extreme baggage. Most of them wound up divorcing, as well. In and out of therapists and relationships. Nobody knows how to be married because they didn't get a chance to observe it themselves.
