The New Orleans Police Department can now shutter businesses that are harboring "violent and serious crime," after the city council unanimously approved an ordinance aimed at cutting skyrocketing crime in the city.

The council unanimously approved the "padlock" ordinance on Thursday, which gives the city’s police department the ability to begin the shuttering process for businesses that knowingly and repeatedly harbor crime. Moreno, who authored the ordinance, said the police chief can now suspend licenses of "chronic nuisance businesses that harbor violent and serious crime."
The council debated the ordinance on Thursday, with some critics saying it could unfairly target businesses. Moreno pushed back, saying businesses would be given ample warning, the opportunity to remedy the problems, as well as due process during court hearings, Fox 8 reported.

Haha that’ll definitely stop it.

So they are going to shut down all of the minority-owned businesses?

I was wondering what was the criteria for shutdown... 10 arrests within a month and 25 ft of business? Number of 911 calls? Beer bottles in parking lot?

The only thing this will do is make the criminals go to other businesses. How is it the businesses responsibility?

Gotta help me out here. Does New Orleans have businesses that you pay them to have them rob, murder, or car jack somebody?
What are some examples of legal businesses that will run the risk of being shut down by this new ordinance?

So someone has a grudge against a business, or wants to get rid of a competitor.
White owned businesses better watch out.
Due process . . . In New Orleans? What a joke

I would rather not list them, but i can think of at least three just on s claiborne. Many more around the city. The John in the marigny for example might be one of them…

I see a huge opportunity here for some 4-D chess in nola. Local bars/restaurants just need to find out the criteria required to get a shop shutdown, pay some unruly people, make some calls to the cops, and get their rival businesses closed.

The NOPD will enforce it, but who’s responsible for prosecuting the new law?
If it’s the DA who regularly fails to prosecute individuals who are violent offenders, why is he suddenly going to be better at prosecuting businesses that harbor them?
The only way this works is if the city is profiting. That’s called a shakedown.

I remember one instance where a bar, the type with no dress code, kicked 2 guys out for starting fights. These two gentleman returned with friends and were allowed to re-enter the club on the condition they pay double the cover. In an ironic twist of fate, the brawl that ensued caused more damage than they prob made at the door the whole night.
Seems like this type ordinance would be good for that type of place.

I was thinking they will shut down places that are basically parting stolen cars.
They should also shut down the mayors office.

It's interesting because every time i call 911 about crime or criminals around my business NOPD doesn't show up. 6 calls
this year and not one police officer has so much as driven by or even called me back. Furthermore I have tried to hire details from any and all law enforcement agencies in Orleans Parish and been told no as well. There's about a million ways this law can go sideways and benefit vindictive politicians in power. This is why people who know what's going on know that Helena Moreno is every bit as bad as Latoya but in a kindler, gentler way. Maybe worse because she's a true believer in the Progressive Agenda, Latoya is just an ignorant crook on a power trip.
