Cheap ponchos is pretty much what I have always used but you are right about that. Those sons a bitches get hot as hell. Then when the rain stops they stick to you and you have to almost peel them off.

I wouldn't purchase myself but I can't complain with my 5yr anniversary Arcteryx jacket. Definitely fills the void in my lightweight rain gear

Frogg Toggs

I keep one of these in my motorcycle saddlebag for when I get caught in the rain. The one I have is 2 piece with elastic straps at leg's end to fit under my boots so it doesn't ride up rolling down the road. The top fully covers below the waist area so no rain blows past it even when doing 70 in the rain.

The collar has a velcro closure or I can use the built-in hood to go under my helmet to keep rain from running down my back.

Marmot Precip is the best bang for your buck on rain jackets. Would say it’s about as good as the Patagonia torrentshell without the premium price.

I have just a standard Columbia rain jacket from Academy. It was like $80 and is thin/breathable enough to wear in the summer and I can layer under it in the winter.

Works fine for me.

Aftco makes a great one for sure but it's pricy as raincoats go.

Got this one as a gift from Academy a few months ago. Works well so far.

Montbell Versalite. They're expensive, but highly effective and ultralight. I highly recommend. And if you order it directly from their Japanese webpage, you can get it about 40% off b/c of the favorable exchange rate.

Had one, liked it but it’s inside disintegrated. I switched to the Marmot Minimalist (goretex) years ago and have never looked back. Worth every penny. It is the best all-around jacket for south Louisiana. All you need most of the year, bomb proof, entirely waterproof. All I will ever own.

Had an Aftco that was great but I unfortunately lost it. I have a Helly Hansen now that I use on the water and when I’m running errands in the rain. My father swears by frogg toggs.

Also keep a cheap packable Columbia jacket in my suitcase just in case, that little jacket has been handy.

We have several of these, one stays in each of our cars and one stays in each of our carry on luggage. They weren't cheap because they are TNF but they pack very small and are effective as an outer layer (only). The bag is actually attached to the tail so you can't lose it. I assume most outdoor companies have something similar. They are not breathable but work fine in most weather, especially cold. I put a bill in for scale but they will compress a lot smaller than it appears and can be carried in a pants pocket or a jacket pocket and take up very little room in a day pack or luggage.
