Next: Get rid of the license plate stickers

Inspection stickers have been killed. The next to go should be the tiny license plate stickers that we get with registration.

They cost the State to buy and mail, and a study shows they have zero impact on whether people keep their registration current. This would save the state money, save citizens PITA, and have no downside (unless your brother in law runs the sticker company).

“After more than a century of managing these arcane and outdated rules, a growing number of states are going electronic and sticker-free. New Jersey was the first to ditch its vehicle decals in 2004. One cited reason was sticker theft. Connecticut followed in 2010 because technology made registration stickers unnecessary, saving the state hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. Pennsylvania stopped in 2017.

A Pennsylvania State study found the change had zero effect on how many drivers stayed current on their registration, and it saved the state $1.1 million a year on tag production and another $2 million on mailing them out.
This year, Idaho joined the no-registration-sticker club, saving the state about $300,000 annually. North Carolina is moving to an electronic system starting Oct. 1, eliminating printing and mailing costs that total $4.8 million annually.”
