Gary Johnson ran for president and didn't know what Aleppo was or where it was located.

Considering that history courses never even make it to WWII until the year runs out, I'm not surprised.
It is distrubing how many people suggest that if it wasn't taught in school people can't know it. Information is available after you stop your formal education. I suspect most functioning adults learn more outside of a classroom than they do in one.

Also, mentally disabled.
Plus, how many did the Gestapo just shoot down because of not properly "honoring" the Fuhrer?

True. In fact the first victims of the Nazis were German elderly, disabled, and even infants. And as for the Gestapo, in the final stages of the war they were rounding up old German men and little boys and hanging them from lamp posts.

I agree the overall results are surprising but how exactly was that question posed? "Can you identify Auschwitz?" What exactly do they mean? Can you identify the location of Auschwitz on a map? Can you identify a photo of Auschwitz out of a group of photos of concentration camps? A no answer to either of those wouldn't be surprising at all. If the question was "Do you know what Auschwitz is?" with the correct answer being concentration camp, then that percentage of no answers is extremely surprising. Even with that though, if this was the first question in a survey that where the topic of the survey was completely unknown or if it was one question in a survey that had other questions completely unrelated to the holocust included, then I could certainly see a decent percentage of people not being able to put the word "Auschwitz" in context and saying not sure/incorrect response. I imagine the percentages would change pretty drastically if the question was changed to "As it relates to the holocaust, can you identify what Auschwitz is?"

Looking at the actual survey, I don't see the actual questions posed, but there is a table in regards to the Auschwitz question.
quote:
Table 2. Identification of Auschwitz
Statement % US Adults Agree
Concentration Camp 40%
Death/Extermination Camp 23%
Forced Labor Camp 1%
Not sure/Incorrect response 41%

Jim Crow was reprehensible and a national shame. But you can’t honestly be comparing it to the Holocaust. You can’t be that fricking stupid.

If you feel the need to compare it, go ahead. I'm pointing out it was a 100-year atrocity that actually happened in this country. And I'm guessing a bigger % of adults/millennials are ignorant of it.

Thank you standardized testing that turned everything into a game of who can memorize these 20 trivia questions for a week and if they can't at least learn how to get rid of the wrong multiple choice answers! We couldn't have done it w/o you!

Where did they get this sample? I'm a millennial and I've seen about every documentary on WWII that's available. The World at War is the GOAT of those btw.
Going further, I've found that a large proportion of people in my age range are also fascinated by WWII. I mean shite, The Diary of Anne Frank was required reading when I was in high school.

Again, I have no idea how one could be living in America and have never heard of the Jim Crow era. Especially living in this era of sensitivity

Consider who did the survey "Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany", you think the NAACP is going to field a survey that finds racial relatiojnships are improving?

Too busy being taught how to pass a government required test to learn actual stuff.

I'm not suggesting that at all.
I'm suggesting that more people responding to a survey would know it if it was taught.

Oy vey I'm ra'ing this thread. You all should observe 60 seconds of silence for the 60 million killed as penance for reckless questioning

Isn't there some dispute as to the authenticity of the diary*?
*Trust me, not going all goldennugget here. But I've read there are some questions about this particular literature.

No clue, but I'm pretty sure it's still used in school. Despite anyone's opinion on it's legitimacy, it should still serve to educate people on the holocaust
