I'm good with all of this but I am a little concerned with the average store clerk being able to determine what is acceptable and what is not, based on those descriptions. If a detailed listing is provided, it's likely to be extensive. Then again, I'm not familiar with how the snap program is implemented and/ or managed, so they may have controls in place.

No liquids besides milk, 100 percent juice and baby formula should be allowed. Not water, no soda, not diet drinks, etc.

Water comes from the tap, and is already heavily subsidized - if not outright free.

I personally think allowing bottled water to be bought with SNAP is even more egregious than soft drinks.

Alabama has a similar law expected to pass this session.

The clerk won't have to. It's all electronic. Preshis Sheeneque scans all her fatty cakes, tries to pay with her "benuhfitz", and the transaction is declined based on the SKU and payment method.

ETA: This law just went in to affect here in Idaho on the 15th as well. The only people really upset were the privileged white progressive women from the North End of Boise.

The computer determines what is eligible or not when it's scanned. They're not letting teenage checkout workers decide.

Except at the little mom and pop stores and bodegas, where they don't use SKUs and everything is rung up manually. Everything is acceptable, and always has been. Even precooked meals, alcohol and cigarettes.

Someone was b*tching that kids deserve candy and cold drinks. I didn’t have the energy to ask her what a “cold drink” is. Put ice in water? Cold drink.

Not many of these exist. But most places that have EBT have to have some sort of tracking or method of classifying food items as such. If not, legislators should pass something to require this or do not accept EBT at all.

I think some Farmers markets accept EBT for fresh fruits and vegetables, I guess if someone tried to pass off a fraudulent EBT transaction would be caught pretty easily trying to convert a few hundred in EBT for 50 cents on the dollar as cash.

SNAP should be limited to staples such as dry beans, rice, bread and grains, vegetable oil, margarine, eggs, dairy, fruits, vegetables, fruit juices, flour, meats, etc. People need to learn how to cook.

Make crab legs and shrimp next.

Any meats over $10/lb is luxury

Even if they do use SKUs, they can still ring the item up for whatever they want. You are not supposed to be able to buy cooked food with SNAP. So they sell the item as "uncooked" but they cook it.

This new law will help immensely but there will still be fraud and ways to maneuver around it.

We pay to make them obese, and then pay their obesity related healthcare costs.

Hopefully this is a step in the right direction, but it's not enough.

I think some places even sell boiled crawfish that has been cooled down to get around the "no hot food" rule. That's probably a real head scratcher when you're watching it happen as someone not on SNAP and avoiding crawfish due to the insane prices.

Funny enough, I would be okay with something like rotisserie chicken being on the allowable foods list, but it isn't because of the hot food rule. In fact, I'd be fine with just a basic list of items SNAP covers and it being a mixture of healthy whole foods and healthy but premade foods like rotisserie chickens.
