Interesting Engineering

Partially state-owned French shipbuilder Naval Group has released fresh renderings on Twitter of France’s future nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, designed to replace the country’s Charles de Gaulle ship.

A new generation aircraft carrier
The new images of what is presently known as the porte-avions de nouvelle génération (PANG), called a New Generation Aircraft Carrier in English, were showcased around the EuroNaval 2022 conference in Paris on Tuesday.

The new ship will weigh 75,000 tonne (82,673 tons) and will be 310m (1,017 ft) long and 85m (279 feet) at the widest point of the carrier deck.

It will boast two nuclear reactors, provided by TechnicAtome that will generate enough electricity for three shaft drives. This makes it almost the same size as larger US aircraft carriers that have four shaft drives.

The new ship will have the capacity to carry about 32 new generation fighters, up to three E-2D Advanced Hawkeyes and several other unmanned aircraft. Its engineering and building will see Naval Group and the Chantiers de l’Atlantique join forces to create a new entity called MO Porte Avions.

Are they painting them white so they can use the parts as flags to wave when they come under attack?

Yeah, but they made their Marine Corps a part of their Army.

France is probably the best military in Europe at the moment

Who will the French be fighting to need this?

Let’s let them take over the job of world policing while we focus on getting out of debt

Decisions to build ships like this are 50 year investments. There will be future adversaries when the world order as we know it falls apart.

Nuclear powered?!? What about sunshine and squirrel farts? That won’t work for things this size?

The “tree-hugging anti-nuke European” stereotype doesn’t work for the French. They’re possibly more nuclear power-friendly than we are.

Seriously? Do you know history? The current peace in western Europe is a blip.

I am curious who might build the first drone only or primarily drone mini carrier. Does the US have anything in the works?

Of course the next step would be a drone mini drone carrier. Skynet here we come!

I don't know about drone only carriers but they're working on the next generation air to air refueler for the Navy is a drone. Can't be too far of a leap to go to attack versions of the same drone. MQ-25 Stingray. Since they retired the KA-6Ds air refueling has been carried out by Hornets which is wearing them out doing tasks they weren't originally designed for.

France is very forward thinking on nuclear energy.

That's why they aren't freaking out so much about Putin's gas pipes.

I know we like to make fun of the French because of WWII, but if you look at what the Germans did, it was that or annihilation....two shitty choices. But aside from that, French soldiers and sailors are some of the toughest bastards you will ever run into. Well trained and well supplied and when called upon pretty effective

They wrote the book in Algeria of how to blunt an insurgency until the political leadership sold them out. They actually had the Viet Minh on their heels until getting caught in a valley at Dienbienphu. Their training in French Guiana is probably arguably harder than BUDS for the SEALs. As a military, their military leaders are the opposite of woke. I would feel more comfortable if the US mitary would operate more like the French.

70% of France's electricity comes from nuclear.

Would stand up well next to the Gerald Ford Class Carriers, however the Royal Navy's Queen Elizabeth Class...Meh!
