Anyone who thinks France rolled over and surrendered to Germany in 1940 without a fight needs to do some actual study of the Battle of France. In Six Weeks the French inflicted the following losses on the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe:
49,000 KIA*
111,000 Wounded
18,000 missing
1,100 aircrew lost
1,200 aircraft (21% of deployed aircraft)
800 tanks (33% of deployed tanks)
As for the French, they suffered over 380,00 killed, wounded, and missing by the end of the campaign.
All that was done in roughly six weeks. The Battle of France was an absolute bloodbath for both the French and Germans. The notion France just rolled over without first putting up one hell of a fight is patently absurd and completely divorced from reality.

* - for some context, while 49,00 Germans died in the six week long Battle of France, 58,000 Americans were KIA in the nine years of the Vietnam War.

France didn't have the manpower to hold Indochina long term
After WWII when the French attempted to reestablish their colonial empire, they had to hire defeated Japanese soldiers to keep order in the colony. That did not set too well with the Indo-Chinese who suffered greatly at the hands of the Japanese.

Threads like this teach me quite a bit. Some good and interesting information here that I haven’t ever taken the time to study.
