That's why they aren't freaking out so much about Putin's gas pipes.
They’re solid member of the NATO alliance. A nuclear power in BOTH weapons and energy sector…and fifth largest military in in Europe in terms of personnel, behind Turkey and Russia/Belarus/Ukraine themselves.
We really need to make France happy. I hope we figured out a way to smooth over the ruffled feathers we caused when we outbid them for the Australian submarine contracts.

French are in the process of an unceremonious withdrawal from Mali after the new military junta kicked them out in favor of Wagner group mercenaries.

I know we like to make fun of the French because of WWII, but if you look at what the Germans did, it was that or annihilation....two shitty choices.
And less than a generation removed from losing over 4% of their total population in WWI, with roughly 1.7M deaths. France got steamrolled in WWII due to a combination of antiquated technology and tactics, not because they were cowards. Not only is the popular perception stupid, but it ignores the lessons that should be learned from the early stages of that conflict.

In the very early stages of WWII the French soldiers fought valiantly. The French and Belgiums defended the perimeter of Dunkirk while the Brits evacuated. They continued in their positions even after running out of ammo - actually throwing stones at the advancing Germans.

It’s slipping man. About a year ago Niger changed their national anthem to remove all the parts that mentioned their French colonial heritage. Also last year a fairly large French military convoy traveling into Niger from Burkina Faso was met at the border with a crowd numbering in hundreds blocking the road and throwing rocks and shite. The French used tear gas and low passes overhead by their Mirage jets to disperse the crowd.

They actually had the Viet Minh on their heels until getting caught in a valley at Dienbienphu
France didn't have the manpower to hold Indochina long term, and didn't have the political will, or perhaps the wherewithal, to commit more resources. Dien Bien Phu was an attempt to lure the Viet Minh into an open battle and defeat them decisively. But the site was poorly chosen; too close to the Laos border, surrounded by hills the French didn't control, and too far from French airfields for reliable resupply and close air support. France also badly underestimated the Viet Minh ability to bring in artillery and conduct a siege.

Yeah, the French artillery commander assured de Castres the Viet's couldn't possibly get artillery into the hills above Dien Bien Phu.
Wrong.
Wrong.

We won't have a Marine Corps in ten years. This dumbass Commandant has all but assured that.

Wow. That aircraft carrier has a launch ramp. That’s seems odd.
Posted on 10/22/22 at 2:17 pm to supadave3
a lot of the currently operating carriers outside of the US navy use that ramp. largely because using a catapult to launch modern planes is really hard and is something that the US has spent decades and decades of R&D on to both increase efficiency and how to correctly design the decks of our carriers to accommodate them
other countries dont have that, and building a ski jump is just a lot easier. though its not as ideal

It does seem that France should have more than 1 aircraft carrier.
For a coastal European nation with overseas territories, one would think a 2 for the Atlantic, 1 for the Pacific approach (total: 3) would suffice. At minimum they should have 2.
The UK has virtually the same population size and has 2 aircraft carriers themselves.
Edit: Italy has 2.
France’s Marine Corps is 17,000 strong. (That’s 10,000 more than the Royal Marine Corps.)
Seems France should provide more support to their naval and expeditionary branches.
