Years ago BMW included a full sized spare mounted on the same wheel type. They gave you 5 wheels and tires so no matter what you were in good shape and not on a donut or cheap steel rim. It was a selling point they emphasized when showing the cars.
How most cars ended up with a can of run flat or nothing at all is ridiculous. Nothing can fill a tire that has real road damage. It’s a great feeling when you’re traveling away from home.

My Pacific is the same way. I hate it

My elderly parents would lug around a full size spare on a Chrysler minivan afraid of getting a flat.
I pull a boat 550 miles each way on summer vacation each year. I should have a NASCAR sponsor. I carry trailer bearings, spare trailer lights, a floor jack, wood blocking, and two spares for the trailer.
Getting a blowout on the way to work, I will sleep on side of the road for three hours waiting on AAA. Getting a blowout on vacation, I will lay on 130 degree asphalt to get back in the game in 15 minutes.

My wife’s car didn’t come with a spare so I ordered the spare and jack kit online. I wasn’t comfortable with her breaking down in the middle of nowhere or at night.

This has been a thing for almost 20 years now.

Not like any Nancy boy could actually change a tire anyway

Many cars have not had spares for many years.

We had a BMW a few years back that had run flat tires and no spare.

My wife's 2014 MDX didn't come with a spare. It came with a compressor/fix a flat. We tried it and it wouldn't fill/fix the flat. We were stuck on the highway until road side assistance showed up

I teach at a HS. Girl was leaving today and hit a curb with her Jeep Compass. Shredded the sidewall. I said let’s get your spare and I’ll teach you how to change a tire. No spare. An air compressor and fix a flat. Won’t fix a hole in the sidewall. Dumbest shite I had ever seen. Told her when she replaces the tire get a spare and throw it in there.

Been that way for years

My older Tundra with 225,000 miles has a spare tire.

I get flat tires pretty regularly. Lots of gravel roads in my rural area. Even if mine comes with a donut I ditch it and get a full size spare.
I guess with cell phones it's different times now. Most young people are clueless how to change a tire anyway.
I watched two 20 somethings fiddle with a tire iron trying to break lugs for a good 15 minutes before I went over, lowered their jack putting the tire back on the ground and stood on the end of the wrench to break the lug. I did two lugs for them and let them tackle the rest.

The Silverado might as well not. You have to be part acrobat, part structural engineer to get access to it.

If you're that concerned about a spare, call up a few pullapart yards and see if they have your make/model being scrapped. Go pull a tire off.

remember this with a coworker's Mustang like 10 years ago. It came with a tire repair kit. Screw that.
Whatever the Chrysler minivan is called doesn't come with one.

It's all about weight. Remove enough, and you drop the car to a different EPA weight class, which means the MPG on its sticker tests higher.
And yes, it will become the de facto norm for all but some trucks and SUVs.
As an aside, tires are far less likely to go flat now, and you have a TPS system to warn you about slow leaks too.
