Where's that guy that melted down about Stout? Maybe we should ask him. He seemed like a patriotic fella.

I'm torn on this one. On one hand, they are displaying pride, something not many Americans still do. On the other, they are not adhering to proper flag etiquette.

Give them a free flag and they will proudly replace it.

I was mostly curious if anyone in the OT has ever gotten themselves involved in a situation like this.

My HOA is relatively lenient, but they do require that any flags displayed must be in good condition, and specify "especially American flags". So while I've noticed a couple of faded flags before, they were eventually taken down or replaced.

If this neighbor is flying the flag in the first place, they would likely appreciate the gesture of being offered a new one.

My question is: "Who determines when it is too worn to fly?"

Understood. Do you have a HOA. I hate to be that guy. It irks me to see it. I have stopped and asked several times if I could replace some ones flag that was worn or tattered and have had no problems. Several have asked what am I doing with the tattered flag and I have advised on how we retire them.

I’ll say the unpopular opinion: the flag code for civilians is BS. Agreed that government should follow the flag code, but IDGAF if a private person leaves the flat up overnight without a light on it. Or if the private person is flying an old tattered flag. Or if the private person throws the flag in a garbage can.

It’s a piece of cloth until you put value on it. And a flag on someone’s house to me has no value. It’s like flying an LSU flag. You’re a fan. A flag on government property has value and is there for a purpose.

What if that was someone's grandpa's flag that they flew in WW2 that you just stole?

No one who has such a flag would leave it outside, tattered and torn apart by the weather.

If you’re going to come up with a weak arse straw man at least make it a little stronger.

Reminds me of Johnny cash’s ragged old flag song.

Dunno why you’re so defensive about having multiple US flags.

Flag code is idiotic. When I get a new one, my old one goes in the trash, headed its permanent home in the landfill. As far as I am concerned, there’s not a more appropriate burial location in America.

Put it in the huddle for T Bob to answer. He can stroke you and give you a thirty minute lecture on the flags of Middle Earth.

It's been my observation the people who love to wrap themselves in the American flag do not know how to display or care for it. I roll my eyes everytime I see a truck flying (dragging) a big flag behind it as it "rolls coal" all over it.

Buy them a new flag bring it over with a few beers and say you saw their flag could use a replacement and talk with them. It could do you wonders for being gay

Inform them that the American Legion will properly retire the flag for them. Getting a replacement is easy but people don’t know what to do with the old one. You don’t throw it away.
