My cousin starts college in a couple weeks. He has never smoked, drank, vaped, etc. His dad is worried about him being too sheltered and getting overwhelmed.
Happened to a buddy of mines brother. They get out in college on their own and tend to go off the rails with the partying bc it’s all so new to em. At least in high school your parents can sort of guide you and by the time you get to college you aren’t going in blind.

I was in the less than 10% group for the year I graduated...

Cigs are now symbols of lower class behavior, and they’re gross, often repellent.
That said, these numbers are largely driven by the fact that tons of kids don’t socialize much, and drinking and doing drugs are social activities, at least in initial exploration.

No wonder kids today kinda suck.
And if I woulda had social media to hound around with I woulda stared a hole in my device in 1986. Can you imagine instant access to thousands of girls? I swear. I was with a group of 15 year olds this weekend and when I went out to check on em Saturday evening they were all staring at their phone. In true old man fashion I gave em shite.
Asked em what was so interesting on those damn phones. Four or five clues me in on the interactions they were having thru various social media platforms. I nodded understanding and went back inside.
Between these sessions they played basketball and swam, no different than we did.

We were lucky ti get in touch w our friends at all, leaving messages and hoping they called back eventually. Organizing 5-6 dudes to get together and hang out was a few times a month thing. Not daily

I don't think a measly 5% were straight edge in 1976. I was in high school then and knew a good many who didn't have any of those vices. Now sex, on the other hand, was a big deal.

Alcohol is one of the worst drugs out there.
agreed brother
other than the occasional beer with friends, drinking shouldn't be a societal norm.

Mine was recently a senior. She’s very boring. No alcohol, no drugs, no tobacco, no sex (that we’re aware of). Seems most of the folks she’s in school are the same.

Straight edge also means no girls I bet.

Smoking cigarettes is no longer cool, generally speaking

Believe it or not there are factions of the "straight edge" movement that do abstain from sex outside of marriage. At least in the 90s. These weren't choirboys either. "Hardcore" kids. Fighting was their addiction.

I don't think teens do nearly as much drinking and drugging as we did in the late 70s and early 80s. I know our son didn't. He did it a little but nothing like what we did when I was in high school. We were fricking degenerates....I don't know how more of us did not die. Drinking age was 18. I had a full beard before my 14th birthday....I could buy alcohol anywhere without being carded....did not need a fake ID. It was not great. It was fun, or we thought it was but we were out of control. We did it publicly also....did not care what anyone thought. Do not see stoned or drunk teens in public around us today.

Ehhhhh, they are getting them. My youngest is 18 and gets into bars and was actually surprised at the amount of female smokers her age that she encountered. She said vaping is the big thing, but if they don't have a vape, cigarettes are still a big alternative.
