A lot of that figure must have been smoking from back in the day. I was in high school from 90-94 and we had smoking sections in the courtyard for students between classes. Crazy to even imagine nowadays.

In 1975 the legal drinking age was 18 in most all states. Was in Louisiana. It doesn't surprise me that the percentages went up since it has become harder for people under 21 to purchase alcohol or tobacco products.

Lol. They practically pushed cigarettes at you in the 70% and beer was legal at 17 and MUCH easier to get.

I was straight edge in high school in 2007.

I did not have alcohol until freshman year of college.

That sounds about right. I think nearly half my high school in the late 90s were, as we called them, “goody goody.” I would have made better grades and done better in sports had i been one of them.

I genuinely believe there is a truth to this. I think a lot of younger men are driven to succeed and know that drugs/booze/etc will not lead them there. The odds are stacked against them and they know it will be hard enough without distractions.

Hell I am straight edge now.

I cigs, mj, vape, and I might have a drink once every month or two.

Better things to spend money on

Athletes are nominally supposed to be straight edge for increased performance in competition. And athletic participation is pretty high these days IIRC.

OTOH, people lie if they think the surveys are compromised.

Straight edge has been around the punk movement a long time, like this song from Minor Threat in 1981.

I'm a person just like you
But I've got better things to do
Than sit around and frick my head
Hang out with the living dead
Snort white shite up my nose
Pass out at the shows
I don't even think about speed
That's something I just don't need
I've gone straight edge

I'm a person just like you
But I've got better things to do
Than sit around and smoke dope
Because I know that I can cope
Laugh at the thought of eating ludes
Laugh at the thought of sniffing glue
Always gonna keep in touch
Never want to use a crutch
I've gone straight edge
I've gone straight edge
I've gone straight edge
I've gone straight edge

Minor Threat Straight Edge

But yall would know this if you were like me in your youth and found yourself in mosh pits instead of staring at chicks at a Garth Brooks or Alabama concert.

My cousin starts college in a couple weeks. He has never smoked, drank, vaped, etc. His dad is worried about him being too sheltered and getting overwhelmed.

Id rather have them be normal and get into normal teenage shite instead of 1/3 of em addicted to Tik tok and claiming to be gay or trans.
