People from outside the south don't usually pronounce Mobile correctly. There are also a lot of French names that have been rednecked up. Like Riviere Du Chien neighborhood is "river do sheen" and Petit Bois Island is "petty boy island".

You should hear them struggle with “Bueche”.

“Gheens” is another Good one.

In Georgia:

Berlin -- Burr lin
Cairo -- Kay roe
Hahira -- Hey Hi Ra
Atlanta -- AT lanna (very old school Atlantans)

In Alabama:

Lafayette -- La FAY et or La fet
most any place with a Creek name, even though they are generally pronounced phonetically (Lochapoka, Notasulga, Opelika, Tuskegee, Conecuh, Tallasee, etc)

It’s usually rich girls from River Oaks whose daddies are paying for them to live in ‘The Village’ for a year or two to “work in publishing” who are most insistent about this one.

I got laughed at by a bunch of S. Mississipi baws for pronouncing Saucier So-See-Eh. Apparently those sister kissers say So-cher.
