So the dachshund was the only small dog around?
Butters loves to play with big dogs but if too many crowd him at the park he starts growling/snapping at them which makes the whole group get aggressive.
It's why I always watch him when he's playing with several big dogs and make sure to let others know about it if they are caring for him.

Im pretty sure if it came down to it the other owners would have to somehow prove that your dog attacked while not provoked. Also, they'd likely have to lie about willingly engaging and accepting the risk of the two dogs playing together given their size differential.

Yeah, that's how I feel. But to both parties involved dogs are more than that so I don't know what advice to give other than I wouldn't euthanize my dog if I didn't want to.
I will add that my daughter was bit by a lab over a year ago and the lab's owners (dog people) acted like it was no big deal. It really didn't seem like it was at the time because the dog just snapped really quickly and my daughter was barely bleeding. But here we are over a year later and my daughter still has a scar. So I really have no use for vicious dogs.

In a way I have. My 90 lb Lab/Chow was roughed up by a Rottweiller once and I questioned a lawyer friend about my recourse in a very hypothetical manner and he said the dog would have to have a documentable history of aggression or an attack on a person for something like that to be pushed. Now this was in the 1990's before pittbulls became the scourge of the country, but I suspect it's not much different.
I've also had a smaller 50lb dog that was "dog aggressive" injure a couple of other dogs over his lifetime, but I just volunteered to pay the vet bills and it was fine.
Are these people you're going to see once per year? Even if they were ridiculous in their reaction, you might want to smooth things over by paying the bill.

The only thing nurse is the dog may die. It's a 15 year old dog so I'm not sure how much fight he has in him
If the dog dies, the only fair solution is to agree to put down your dog on its 15th birthday, if it makes it.
Although, part of me says mini-dachshunds shouldn't exist anyways.

As a dog person, if this happened to me then I still wouldn't want your dog put down unless it came after my dog. If they were playing then sometimes shite just happens.
I went through this a little bit in Alabama. My neighbor let their little tiny dog outside without supervision or a leash and it went into my fence with my two dogs, one is about 80 pounds and the other is about 60 pounds. I got a call from my mother telling me that one of my other neighbors called her saying that people were yelling around my fence. Apparently the little dog went in my fence and my dogs grabbed it and threw it around a little. The drunk neighbor broke in my fence door and grabbed his dog and then called the cops wanting them to come take care of my dogs. They just asked him where all of it happened and when he said in my yard they laughed at him and hung up.
Never volunteer to pay for anything on these situations because it basically admits guilt even if you aren't guilty. My buddy had a neighbor that had an old shitty mutt that wandered up to their house one day. Well the dog dug under his fence and got its head stuck under the chainlink and his rott grabbed its head and pulled it under the fence the rest of the way. He told the people he would get them another dog to replace that one even though it wasn't their fault. The people started asking for 1500 dollar dogs and kept leaving him letters about it until he finally told them to frick off.

Euthanize a dog over a dog fight? Lol. Tell them to get lost.

Dogs are property
If little dog dies, I would want to seize the big dog as my own property as form of repayment

We absolutely are going to pay their bills. Going to take ownership of what happened, just not going to kill my dog over it

Exactly. They're dogs not philosophers.

Yeah, I wondered about this. I volunteered to pay but the owners were my friends/colleagues.
While I don't think the dog can be forceable euthanized, I wonder if this crying owner can take some sort of other action against Lester. Doubt it, but it was Florida.

They are probably at just as much fault as you are. I bet money the dog, being that old, got more aggressive in its old age.

Why should your dog live if it mauls another dog that ends in death?

Liberals are against war but all for killing alpha beach dogs and unborn babies.

Here is the bottom line. Do the right thing and pay their bills, don't put your dog down and just don't allow him to be in that situation in the future. Thats IT! You are worried for no reason at all! I PROMISE!!!
