I hate to tell you hoss but all dogs can be vicious at any time. They are animals and hence will act like one regardless.

Because it's not dead. It's a dog, not a human being.

The problem is that this guy sounds like an a-hole. If I had a 15 year old daschund, I wouldn't let it play with a strange younger dog 4-5 times it's size. It's common sense that the dogs are going to establish a pecking order which will often sort out after some aggression and posturing. The other owner sounds like a dim bulb.

Yeah, was the owner of the dachshund present when this happened?

Exactly. I guarantee you the dog got more aggressive in its old age and the owner knew this.

Dachshunds tend to be very snappy dogs in general.

That's what all dogs have the potential to do, good or bad. Dogs are animals. And, regardless of how much people want to anthropomorphize them, they are not human and are, for the most part, stupid. I love dogs, but that are not going to behave like polite company much of the time.

Snappy does not mean that it deserves to get mauled. Lester should have kept his dog in check, so now he has to deal with the consequences

Here is the bottom line. Do the right thing and pay their bills, don't put your dog down and just don't allow him to be in that situation in the future. Thats IT! You are worried for no reason at all! I PROMISE!!!

The problem with volunteering to pay bills up front is that some of those people go above and beyond to try to save a dog that is unsavable. My neighbors took theirs to the on-call vet which brings a premium and "their was blood every where and the dog was just broken in half". After about $600 in vet bills, there was a small puncture on the dogs butt and it was scared as hell, otherwise nothing was wrong with the dog.

If this dog is really in bad shape they can do all kinds of stupid surgeries that could have no effect on whether the dog lives or dies. It is usually better to express how sorry you are about everything and let it die down a day or two before fricking with them again. People get really upset about their dogs, especially small dogs that they treat like kids, and can try to do some really stupid stuff during some knee jerk reactions. That is why I said not to volunteer anything up front.

It doesn't matter IMO. I would pay anything to save the dogs life if my dog was responsible.

Just a back story, his wife & my mom are friends. Their other dogs have played together every January for the past 5 years. They were fine with both dogs playing in their yard off a leash.

Wow.

Sending good vibes your way, LE. That's a situation I wish upon no-one.

Lots of communication between dogs is not apparent to human eyes. Smaller dogs have a tendency to want to establish dominance over other larger dogs. Dachshund probably started it. Should Lester pay the bill? Probably not. Should Lester put his dog down? Lol that's laughable.

For what? What's the value of a 15 year old Daschund? $100? The vet fees? He already said he was paying those.

ETA…But, it is Florida.

This is true. Older small dogs, ESPECIALLY Dachshunds, get really defensive when they are old and dying. I would bet almost anything the older dog started it.
