Have they asked Elon Musk for permission to do that?

Instead of opening the Bonnet Carré Spillway, Hosemann and Mississippi wildlife advocates have offered the following alternatives:

Utilization of the Morganza Spillway to direct excess flow through the Atchafalaya Basin instead of into the Mississippi Sound

Emergency dredging of the Mississippi River both south of the Bonnet Carré and near the river’s mouth to increase
conveyance and avoid spillway use

Utilization of the Old River control structure for diversion of flood waters prior to reaching the Bonnet Carré Coordinated, timed reservoir releases upriver to flatten flood peaks before they reach the lower valley

Honestly, I support all of these recommendations. Above the ORCS, there is an estimated 10s of millions of cubic yards of silt that could be used annually.

Assume 50 million tons of sediment moving in that section annually (a reasonable ballpark considering modern flow rates).

Wet river silt converts at roughly 0.7 cubic yards per ton.

So:
50,000,000×0.7=35,000,000 cubic yards

Seems like this would be beneficial for coastal erosion projects along the coast.

Good. Let it play out in court. We need more diversion options before all the water hits Louisiana (if possible).

So Louisiana isn’t allowed to open a spillway to make sure the levees around the Mississippi River don’t get breached and flood Louisiana communities because the Mississippi commercial fishermen don’t want any freshwater in the Mississippi Sound?

Open the Morganza

Aren’t the parameters that determine when the Bonnet Carre is opened mandated by Federal Law (Congress)?

It falls under the CoE Mississippi Valley Division. I wouldn't think it requires any congressional authority. Apparently the commander who is a 3 star General makes the call.

They need to shift their focus to river management instead of using Bonnet Carre as a crutch

Isn't that the purpose of a spillway? To be used as a crutch...

holy shite reminds of the councilman in houma that suggested they dredge deeper under the bridge bc a study showed a very high percentage of openings were due to the antennae on the tug boats

From a Mississippi standpoint

How many times has Moganza been opened compared to Bonnie-Carrie?

Morganza negatively affects LA, Bonnie-Carrie negatively affects MS.

Do they not both help with flooding of N.O.?

Let's be serious. Nobody is going to the Mississippi coast for the beauty of the water. That's false.

1973. The structure almost failed because it couldn’t handle the volume. It’s why the auxiliary structure was built.

I was on the structure in 1973. The whole massive thing was shaking. Water all around. Mr Simoneaux ( the USACE boss on the structure) would ask. “Have you ever heard of Murphy’s Law ? Fricking Murphy lives here. “

It's not the "beauty of the water" but the beach, bay, river, etc in BSL is jam packed every weekend. The last time the spillway opened you couldn't swim south of I-10

Like I said it doesn't matter what MS threatens because they are going to open it if they want to but it's not just fisherman affected, it's all kind of small business, especially in Bay St Louis.

The 2019 spillway opening was more destructive to oyster beds than Katrina or the BP spill.

It killed oyster beds as far as Pascagoula.

Nah. Mississippi isn't more important than the central Louisiana coast. If you open one you should open both.

At the end of the day, If they dont dramatically lower the river bed (it rises every year) there will be a flood that overtops the levees or breaks through the ORCS or something else catastrophic. The spillways and diversions are not enough, but this is another reason why the mid-barataria diversion would be helpful to provide an additional outlet of flow.
