Yes. I know. So let's get all of the completely unpredictable and original replies out of the way:

- Move out of Louisiana
- Alexandria is a shithole
- You call that living?

Ok cool. A few things to note:

- Why move to CenLa? Family. Both me and my wife value family. And we have an opportunity to move closer so my kids can have better and deeper relationships with their grandparents and cousins. And for me and my wife to help take care of our parents as they age.
- We won't be living in Alexandria.
- Both myself and my wife are from Alexandria or the area, but neither have lived there in 2+ decades.

A few questions:

Schools: We are both pretty against my kids (7 and 13) going to the local small school. We are interested in Bolton, now that it is a Magnet school. Both of my kids are currently in the Magnet program in Caddo and its been great. Does anyone have kids or opinions on the new Bolton? If not Bolton, are the private options still only Grace Christian or Menard?

Restaurants: Where do you guys go for night out? We always seem to default to Spirits when we are in town visiting family and we always leave disappointed.

Grocery stores: Where do you guys buy groceries? Kroger? Any local places that offer specialty meats or local products? Any decent farmers markets?

about 90% of the time I’m against my kids too… I’d say 10% of the time they are endearing, like loving a retard

No one cares about all the background BS of your life.

Just ask the questions.

This is all that matters. I can't help with your original ask. Just wanted to give you props. Your kids will thank you later on in life.

I left there about 15 years ago and didn't look back. But the pull to be near family is always something that matters, so I get it.

There are some nice areas on the outskirts / "suburbs" of town. I did not realize Bolton was a magnet; I was about to say avoid that school for sure. Not sure how much being a magnet will help though.

Plenty of mid-grade restaurants there, not many on the high end that I recall. Texas Roadhouse seems to be the premier steakhouse lol. Tunk's used to be a pretty decent restaurant back in the day, not sure if it still is.

If you are into boating, there some nice recreational areas / campgrounds close.

You would be better off moving your entire family near you than moving to Cen-La. The Alec area is among the most depressing places in the Developed World.

Guillory's Meat Market in Pineville off of 28 East has some pretty good stuff. There is also Town and Country in Alexandria on Masonic on the way out of town headed towards Woodworth. They have some good meat but man, they are proud of it.

My favorite was the quail, but haven't been there in over 25 years. I haven't been to Alexandria in 20 years and it had gone downhill in the previous decade. The area seems to be against any manufacturing coming to the area.

One could argue that if you valued family, you'd be looking for an area where your children could take advantage of better infrastructure and opportunities to where they could start their own families.

Taking care of your parents could look like them selling their house and moving to where you are. People of the older generation have the "Big Chief" mentality where everyone has to go to their house.

Another aspect is healthcare. Alexandria can be a serious downgrade to wherever you're migrating from. Especially if anything is out of the ordinary and you need a specialist.

Unless you're an outdoorsman with acerage and family money, I can't see any good reason to choose Cenla over pretty much anywhere else.

It's kind of mind blowing how little they have done to attract quality companies to the area. My best guess is that the folks that have power or own most of the land there are content with the way things are.

It seems the population has actually been in a decline too. Most kids that go to college don't come back.

Do not send them to Bolton. Ash is probably fine, but with a school of that size they will be exposed to the alternative lifestyles for sure.

I used to go to Belinos for a decent steak, but I also liked spirits so my gauge might be off. Not sure if belinos is still there.

Home school. It's not that hard and it's very rewarding.

You might want to make sure to stay south of I-20.

The closer you get to Arkansas, the “deeper” the relationships between cousins and grandparents/grandchildren get.

Got 4doz ears of fresh sweet corn from Mathew's Super Sweet Corn on Bayou Rapides this past weekend while in town visiting. Fantastic. Me & Lil' Low shucked, blanched, and bagged it all on the pack porch yesterday. There's plenty of local meat producers in Cenla, and there's a farmer's market at the Alexandria 1st United Methodist every week I've heard.

Bolton completely changed 2 years ago. It's not the same Bolton.

Trust me, it wouldn't even be a consideration if it were the old Bolton.
