Baw, get down to Avoyelles Parish and establish your dominance in Bunkie.

Your children will become great at Archery which will come in handy when the world goes all hunger games.

The pizza place down the street form Spirits is very popular and the Mexican restaurant near there is pretty good. I like Rosie Jo's duck appetizer and they have 5 dollar margaritas on Thursday. Parking is a bitch though. (I think there might be an illegal card game going in the back.) The Chinese buffets serve road kill.

Restaurants: Where do you guys go for night out? We always seem to default to Spirits when we are in town visiting family and we always leave disappointed.

Mandarin is basically the old Oriental Wok. They have the same recipe for tiny spicy chicken. Tunks is not what it used to be. Diamond Grill is downtown, along with the Bentley Room.

Also, it's ok to live in Pineville. They sell alcohol across the river now. Woodworth is where you want to be for schools these days. Country Day is another good private option, but they just stopped doing 9th-12th.

The healthcare comment is ridiculous. Alexandria has Cabrini Hospital which is part of the CHRISTUS network of hospitals and Rapides regional hospital. Both are top notch.

Several good elem schools like Peabody Montessori, Nachman, Cherokee, Paradise in Ball, Caroline Dorman in Woodworth, JI Barron in Pineville…

Bolton converting to an Academy is getting better. I personally know the new Principal and he will continue to make it better…ASH, Pineville, and Tioga are all A schools. Rural schools such as Rapides, Oak Hill, Northwood are solid B schools.

Several good neighborhoods. Lake District, Landmark, Tenneyson Oaks, Charles Park, Westpointe…all in Alexandria. Pineville has several new developing areas.

Restaurants are Spirits, Verona, Ballinos, Diamond Grill, Tunks, Trios, Rosie Jo’s and several crawfish type restaurants….and chain restaurants like Walkon’s, OliveGarden, Outback, etc

So let's get all of the completely unpredictable and original replies out of the way:

I will say this about Ellick, it is truly an outdoorsman's crossroads. There's so many options for publically accessible hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, swimming locations within 30-45min of Alexandria. That's the part I truly miss. I used to get off after work and go catch a mess of fish or slip into a deer stand, kill a turkey before work, etc. You can't do that in BR.

Good.

I knew it wasn’t close but I’d have felt badly for you if I hadn’t mentioned the redline and you ended up proximate to the unnatural state.

We are interested in Bolton, now that it is a Magnet school.

From a pure education/quality of academic life, ASH and Pineville are better than all other options, including private/parochial, IMHO. And have been for decades. Heck, even Tioga would be a reasonable option and better than Bolton, Menard and Grace. (Unless a purely Christian education is a high priority for you - there are good people involved with Grace, so that I am not seen to be too critical.)

There is literally no reason to pay for private schooling in Rapides Parish if you can choose to attend ASH, Pineville or Tioga.

Bolton completely changed 2 years ago. It's not the same Bolton.

Trust me, it wouldn't even be a consideration if it were the old Bolton.

Good to hear. But where are all the shitheads going to school if not Bolton anymore? Bolton is not exactly surrounded by the scholarly type of folks....

Thanks

Yeah, the healthcare comment is kinda silly, mostly because if Alec has one thing going for it, it is very centrally located, so if you do need to go see a specialist, its a pretty easy drive to Laffy or BR or Shreveport

School are still the biggest question for us. My wife knows several teachers at Bolton, so she has been talking to them. We have heard good things, but its hard to remove the memories of the old Bolton.

That might be a joke - on the OT, everything North of I-10 is "North" Louisiana. Even Opelousas.

Hope so. I would love to see Alex turn it around and offer some good schools.

I think the economics & employment options make things challenging, amongst other things. So, I will not hold my breath.

Move to Woodworth and send them to Caroline Dormon then Menard. The public schools are ratchet or have at least some level of ratchetness.

Kroger is good. If I remember there is a meat store called Town and Country my parents go to or used to that is solid.

Can't really help you on a night out but some places I liked to eat are Koal's BBQ, BJ's Pizza, Noodles and Grill for Asian. Ton's good Mexican joints. The food options have always been lacking we grew up going to Outback lol.

Somewhere to get out the house and get some drinks the Huckleberry brewery is cool. They also opened a new joint in Pineville called Hemingways that I've heard good stuff about.

Make sure to take them to Wayback Arcade in Pineville that place is awesome.

Alexandria Country Day is way better than Menard. Can’t speak for Bolton magnet since that’s still pretty new.

I went to Country Day for elementary and jr high and Bolton for High school back in the 90s and early 00’s and that was the best education you could get in Alexandria

I did this very thing (moved out of cenla for work, moved back to retire) but not for the kids, they were grown and gone. I grew up about 25 miles south of Alexandria and was away from 1980 till 2019 and a LOT changed. Rapides Parish is still about 75% pine tree forest and some great lakes for fishing, boating etc.

Right now Woodworth is the hot area and has what I hear is a fantastic junior high school. Caroline Dormon There are a couple subdivisions going up in WW and Timberlake and Cedar Bluff are nice.

I know several people that sent their kids to Grace and they were very satisfied with it.

Restaurants are not a "thing" in the area. Next time you're in the area maybe check out Trio's on Versailles or Koal's on 28 West.

Shopping is Walmart, Albertson's, Krogers, Super1, Mac's Fresh, Sam's. We usually do Kroger and Walmarks.

There are a couple specialty meat places around, Martin's, Town & Country, Guillory's in Pineville come to mind.

There is a farmers market every Tuesday in a church parking lot on Jackson and Cabrini parking lot on Saturdays. Checkout Mathews for vegetables and meat. Mathews

Hope this helps and good luck with the move.

Forgot about Country Day, yeah that's a solid option. I went to Nachman, Country Day, and Menard. I would be hesitant to send my kids to the public schools these days. My nephew went to Brame and ASH and came out talking like Eminem
