County Day has changed significantly, and unfortunately not for the better. Both of my children attended there from kindergarten through 8th grade, with my most recent finishing two years ago. My first child had a much stronger experience, benefiting from teachers who were largely retired public school educators with years of classroom experience. In recent years, however, the teaching staff has skewed younger, and some no longer hold formal teaching certifications. My second child was prepared and has excelled in high school, but looking back, the assignments and homework my first child brought home were noticeably more detailed and rigorous than what my second child received. With all that said, outside of Grace, Country Day, Prompt Succor, and Carline Dorman in Woodworth, your options are fairly limited.

Is Finnegan's Wake still downtown
It’s closed, but there is a place downtown called the tasting room

I grew up in Utah and Florida, and I’m about to move to Pineville when I get married. I’ve been with my Fiancée for almost 7 years and have gotten pretty familiar with CENLA and I honestly like it a lot.
Would it be my #1 choice of places to live if my fiancée didn’t live there? No.
However… housing is so much cheaper than 99% of the rest of the country, the people are fantastic, it is centrally located so you are within a few hours from most everything you could ever want, and the food is great. The Cottage restaurant is one of my top 5 favorite restaurants I’ve ever been to.
I just wish the roads were better… but that’s the whole state to be honest.

Is there a decent local coffee shop?
There are a few! Tamp & Grind's downtown, and Caffeinated Brew & Fizz in Pville, Le Bistreaux out 28 West.

Cotile/Gardner area
I have some family that have lived many years in the Wilda community on Cotile, which is near you. They seem to like it, and it has been nice and quiet on my visits.
Tasting Room of Louisiana is across the street from The Bentley. Cool place with food and claims the biggest selection of whiskey in Cenla.
I've stayed at The Bentley a couple times for work, and its bar (The Mirror Room) is a nice, dark place with plenty of seating. It's actually one of my favorite hotel bars.

Is Finnegan's Wake still downtown? That was my hangout when me and the wife were dating.
Man, that was my spot. Probably crossed paths with you back in the day. I even had my own mug behind the bar.
Awesome bar.

First of all, quit having expectations for schools. Public schools are for teachers kids and private schools are for whoever gives the most money. The best you can hope for is to be left alone.

Pineville has a few good coffee places, my favorite being Khmericano coffee. Best lattes in the area and a lovely family who own and operate it. Tamp and Grind in downtown Alex would be a better spot to post up and kill a couple hours, more seating options there.

County Day has changed significantly,
I would still send my kids to it as I value the classroom stuff, but care more about being polite, kind humans.
If you are going to live life as I do, Alex is perfectly fine. If you search around, there is plenty here to do and enjoy.
Hell, in this thread alone I was reminded that I like Huckleberry Brewing and enjoy spending a little time down at Tamp and Grind Coffee, two places I havent been to in years.
