I hate assigning blame to victims, but to me a hayride is done off road like in a plowed field.
Driving on the highway at night with people in a trailer not made to hold people is just not bright. Didn't thins happen closer to home a few years back involving an atv pulled trailer with no lights.
Not at all saying the pick up shouldn't have hit the trailer, just saying kids on a trailer on a dark road at night is not smart.

Emergency responders already have a tough job, but handling dead kids in Halloween costumes has to rank somewhere near the top of your worst day ever list.

Hwy 80 is a dark two lane hwy with traffic moving anywhere from 30-65 mph. There used to be a bar/whore house on Hwy 80 in Chunky. The town name pretty much describes the bartenders/hookers.

I'm guessing that they only planned to be on that hi way for a short while going from one neighborhood to another.

There ain't much in the way of neighborhoods in Chunky, pickens are pretty slim for trick or treating around there.
I would guess population of around 300, driver is likely kin to a few victems or at least knows friends/family.

There is zero chance I'd put my kids on the back of a trailer going onto a highway.
And that's not hindsight, that's just common sense.

I was coming through Grosse Tete yesterday around 5:30PM. Got behind the exact same thing- truck pulling a trailer full of kids/adults going down the highway about 15MPH I realize the annual Halloween gathering/candy fest was in in progress. Lots of cute little children and their parents having a great time. Even I had to smile.
But the idea that the driver let all those kids ride on that trailer down that busy winding road is beyond stupid IMO. Just not worth the risk.
