I've been to Chunky to fish the river there a few times. Surprisingly nice little community in what locals call the "toes" instead foothills of the Smokey mountains.

Completely irresponsible for anyone doing a hayride on a highway. The organizers and parents have to have better judgment than this.

They just buried the father of the 2 kids and the woman's husband in August.

shite as horrible as that is, I'm sure he'd rather be dead than to be the only survivor to this. The family surrounding them is probably at their wits end though.

Seems like every year there is a similar story of some kids being killed/seriously hurt from very poorly planned out hayrides.
I cared for a kid a few years ago that almost lost his foot(his foot was degloved) because the trailer being pulled for the hayride got rear ended (thankfully not at a very fast speed though...no one killed).
Trailer didn't have properly working rear lights.

I used to see that all the time in Charles Park. Big groups from western part of Rapides coming into the neighborhoods to trick or treat.
Then again, we used to ride in the back of pickups everywhere, including on the interstate.

I can see where everyone is coming from about they should have never been on the highway but I live about 3 miles from where it happened. The vehicle was coming off a smaller road and was fixing to turn onto another smaller road that no one travels. Couldn't been on Hwy 80 more than a few hundred feet. Speed limit 35. But still I see the point of shouldn't have risked trying to turn there and make the next road even so close. I thank God that me and my daughter didn't go and feel so bad for the families. Praying hard for all involved.

I heard about this at work today and think it is just damn terrible...this will be a very bad memory for the whole generation of folks from that town. every haloween, they will think about it for the rest of their lives.
have to say, as I drove into my neighborhood from work, I was pretty appalled at the number of grownups and kids that were at risk of getting hit...tons of people in the streets dressed in dark clothes. people walking and driving golf carts all over the place and you really had to strain to see them all. I was relieved when I pulled into my driveway.
