Speaking for a man I'd say marriage material to improve the odds of a long lasting and enjoyable relationship would be that she has a good character (loyal, kind, drive, and values) along with a fun personality (humor, outgoing but not over the top, friendly, has opinions on various things, and adventurous). Of course you still have to be physically attracted to her but those expectation may be somewhat less than a woman you just want to have a fling with as a single. Lifestyle choices, cosmetic work, exercise, dress, etc. can always help to a degree if it is that important for both of you.

Everything else after that is your choice.

She needs to be the person you most want to call to share good or bad news. Just won the lottery? Just got fired? You're first instinct is to call her? You're solid.

Plus at least semi-decent sex.

Bruh, good for you for finally actually thinking that a wife needs to be more than an arm ornament and bang piece but if it took you that long you need to reflect some more on yourself too.

A spouse needs to be a best friend you enjoy having sex with and raise offspring with.

this reads like you are a self-centered dipshit

may read that way, but i'm not... but was the OP not asking for what we look for in a SO? i just happened to list them as it related to me... is it more palatable to your delicate sensibilities if i list it this way:

1.) agreeable temperament
2.) beauty
3.) financial independence/strong work ethic
4.) good with kids
5.) loyalty

does that strike you better, because those are the qualities, i just relayed them in relation to my individual thought process when i was looking or what i was looking for...

Spirituality is the only sure way to have a healthy relationship that will never end.

yet, so, so many pastors are divorced and remarried... why is that? or they cheat on their partners with other women (or men...)

yeah, spirituality is NOT the only way to have a healthy relationship.... it's very pompous and arrogant of spiritual people to think otherwise... it'd be the same as some atheistic douche bag saying only non-spiritual people can be intelligent...

I’d say it came down to three things for me.

1. She needed to be a believer in Christ.
2. She needed to be as far away from a drama queen as is possible for a woman.
3. She needed to have a nice figure and be active enough for me to believe she would keep it. (I know thats superficial but it’s how I felt.)

These criteria have served me well. After 17 years I could not be happier with my SO.

Sorry I got drunk and started this thread but I am happy with the stuff I got back. It’s true that looks is only a bonus when you are talking about spending the rest of your life with someone

Good point, but this is subjective. It comes with maturity and couples can learn this. It’s more of a skill than an attribute. If she’s a wreckless borderline then she won’t learn this too well.

a drive to want to be independent and to be successful on her own.

Better rethink this one. You can admire women like that, but a wife is not the same as a best friend.

An independent woman is not a good candidate for a long, successful marriage. Sorry to sound sexist, but this is a hard truth.

I used to think that way when I was a young man. I looked for a wife who would be my equal and a 50/50 partner in life. You need to learn to appreciate the differences in the sexes and set your expectations a little more in reality.

Let your heart be for your wife and your mind be for your friends.

Trust & Loyalty go hand in hand
Honest
Intelligent
Kind
Thoughtful
Friendly
Adventurous / Willing to try new things
Active
Curious
Christ-follower

Curiosity is strangely important to me. I love talking about a lot of random things and having someone that is intrigued by a variety of topics is helpful. Trust is foundational.

Nice Christian girl.

But I'm old enough to not have to wonder if a potential mate would age well. If I'm not robbing the cradle I already have my answer.

Has never nagged me, and we’ve been together for more than 30 years. That rates as highly as being someone you like and can get along with.

Of course. It’s why I said “sure” way...

And of course marriages fail for a number of reasons across all spectrums.
Look up how many fail in Jesus-first relationships versus marriages centered around anything else. I stand by my recommendation.

Oh and that’s also the reason people don’t even want to get married. Our country is very backwards and we’re seeing the results.

Maybe, maybe not. The thread title was "Significant Other" and besides, you or may not have kids whether you want them or not.

Intelligence and/or work ethic

If you're going to be in it for the long haul you don't want to be with a dumb arse

Willing, eager, sweet.
Obedient. Crazy levels that I can either deal with or shut down.

Appreciative.
