re: More tyranny: Ochsner will make unvaccinated spouses of employees pay $200 per month

The unvaccinated are putting a preventable strain on the medical system and should absolutely have to pay more for medical insurance because of it. If they want to pay less, the vaccine is free and safe.
We should also fire all the medical professionals who aren't vaccinated. You know, to help with the strain on the medical system.

Here is what is happening.
Ochsner employee plan is self-funded. Their plan has actuaries that says how much they need to charge, total, in premiums for 2022.
I'm sure costs have gone up, and part of that is due to COVID hospitalizations. So... Ochsner has decided in the way they allocate the increased costs to premium charges, to allocate $100/paycheck more to unvaccinated individuals.
$2400/yr is not enough to cover the costs if an unvaccinated person ends up in the hospital. But... not every unvax person will end up in hospital. They are spreading the increased cost among the risk factors that led to the increased cost.
My guess is everyone else's premiums will go up as well, to cover all the increases in non-COVID care.
This is all further proof of why I am not a fan of employer sponsored coverage. Your health decisions should have nothing to do with your or your spouse's employment.
Everyone should be required to get their own health insurance. Companies can just increase salaries by the amount they are paying for insurance, and let everyone get their own and let the cost of insurance be 100 percent tax deductible for everyone.
The end. This solves all your problems.

I think the biggest gripe from people who see this are what about people who are overweight/obese? Why not an extra $100 a month for someone that doesn't exercise 3 times a week? Which is obviously an appalling thought, but so is charging people for being unvaccinated, IMO.
I'm vaccinated, and I don't really like this. But if enough people don't like it, it will be reflected. Open enrollment is coming up and people can talk with their enrollments.

True, but one could argue that 30 minutes of exercise a day 3 times a week provides much greater long term benefits than a shot that will need a booster 8 months down the road.

It's dumb no doubt....but it's something companies can do without going down the road of a mandate.....unless said mandate is govt required. This also begs the question....are companies going to try to make employees indirectly pay the OSHA fines if they won't get vaccinated? It wouldn't surprise me.

I don’t think you know what tyranny means

People need to just stop using Ochsner or Doctors associated with them. Their business sucks anyway. Way more concerned about quantity than quality.

That may be something, but its not science. just putting #science hashtag does not make it so...

Not tyranny. Oschner is not a government entity. Its rules apply to its employees not its citizens.
While I don't agree with these rules, Oschner is within its rights.

Dr. Alton Oschner was an principal in the original OSS.
Oschner Hospital was a CIA front, just like the clandestine faux Airline company they operated in and out Mesa, Arkansas but that’s another story.

It’s such a catch 22 with Ochsner. The medical care is phenomenal and I don’t ever want to see that jeopardized, but the senior management is a fricking disaster.

So easy to laugh at the dumbness. American Healthcare is one of the least free market places on the planet.

This is correct. Conservatives who scream “tyranny” at everything = liberals who scream “racism” at everything.

So are the uninsured, majority of the obese, smokers, drug users, alcoholics.... Are we going to get to a point where we can tailor health insurance costs based on all risk factors, of just those that fit an agenda?
And, while we are at it, can we also charge different prices for those that never go, only go for their annual physical, or consistently seek treatment?
