Frick it. I’m bulldozing and starting over! Thanks baws
Naw baw, there are ways to fix it. All led lighting, find out where your a/c is escaping and clear up some gaps. Keep shades and curtains closed when the sun is coming through windows

Never above $250 in the summer at the house in Houston. It’s only a couple years old and all 2x6 which makes a big difference and triple zoned.
Ranch houses in west Texas we usually get a couple hundred bucks back from excess solar production sold back.

quote:My first house was built in 1858, renovated in the early ‘80s about as good as was then technologically practicable. It has 12 foot ceilings, the top 6 foot of which was warm in the winter. The bottom 6’ of the house was warm all summer.
I’m in a very old house that is over a thousand a month
And the power meter spun it’s arse off all year long.
While there are many old houses that are eye candy, I will never live in another one.

That’s about how mine varies, although with a tame winter I’ll get some $200 months.
All electric, a 3 ton and a 2 ton unit. Run the pool pump a lot in the summertime
Ive got 3 AC units

Mine was $59.xx in April, haven't gotten May. Exterior walls are about a foot thick and it is pretty cool in Santa Fe up to late May. Have mini-splits for when it gets really hot, don't think we have been above $105 June-August, and it cools down a lot. Don't ask about air quality with the USFS trying to burn every tree in N NM.

old houses have zero insulation, leaky windows and doors, and paper thin walls
it pays for itself to gut the house to bare studs, even if you have to do just one room ay a time, and rewire the whole house, replace old windows with double pain insulated windows, insulate everywhere, and then sheetrock the whole house.
do that and your electric bill will be cut by 2/3rds or more
there are no shortcuts with old houses, you have to gut them, seal them up, insulate and sheetrock them.

4400 sqft house built in 2017. Full spray foam. Two stories. Single AC unit with multiple zones. The air is always between 68-72 (we chip it down at night while we sleep).
The highest it goes is 250 in the hottest part of summer. I love spray foam.

$80's in the winter. We run the heat aboot 1 week per year.
140ish in July and August. We had extra insulation in the walls during construction, then blew in an extra 2' in the attic. Cinder block, stucco,1900' 4 br, 2 ba. A giant lanai provides shade and keeps the sun from beating in the widows. Water heater is in the garage.

Ours has been around $100. It’s never high despite keeping the house at 70 all day, but I’m starting to wonder if our meter is broken & we’re going to end up with a massive bill.
